I have a Clevo 888E note book (link to clevo web site).

I recently upgraded this laptop with Windows XP Service Pack 2. Installation was successful. Everything worked apart from the laptops internal CDRW which now refuses to work. Looking at hardware manager I can see the CDRW has a yellow exclamation mark beside it. The error says the drive was detected but could not be initialised correctly. So I uninstalled XP Service Pack 2. The problem with the CDRW persists. So I uninstalled the CDRW drivers and reinstalled. During installation the same error showed; that the drive had been detected but it could not be installed correctly.

I have checked the manufacturers web site and I see no drivers updates for this model laptop. The CDRW is a TEAC DW-224E. I have checked TEAC's web site and they don't distribute drivers it seems. Says to go to manufactures web site. In my case my manufacturer is Mesh Compuers. However I cannot check for any drivers on their web site as I don't have a login to their support area and I cannot apply for one online due to an error in their registration system.

Does anyone have any suggestion on what I could try to fix this problem?

Easy way: Search this forum for "filter drivers" and "CDROM" or "CD-ROM" and you'll see how to fix it - basically edit your upper and lower filters (oh, search on those too). Then upgrade to newer software.

Another way: Uninstall your CDROM burning software (or DVD burning SW, or anything similar) and then confirm your CDRW works, then upgrade to newer burning software.

Try this, and report back when happens.

deleted entry for upper and lower filter. CDRW was back. Only recognised as a CD ROM drive, so I reinstalled drivers. Hey presto, CD ROM is recognised as a CDRW and we're rockin' and rollin' once more. Many thanks for your help. I didn't know about these filters!
