Think my older sony burner might be going bye-bye. If so Would buying a yamaha burner with the 8mb buffer or a Teac with the burnproof, both 16X. I have heard some good things about the teac but does anyone have experience or know people with a yamaha burner?..are those good??..is that 8mb enough to where you don't get underruns??...Thanks.

Burn Proof.. is a guarantee.. but that 8mb buffer... is prolly enough to keep you from gettin a coaster.. so i would say.. go ahead and get the cheaper one! :p!

Don't know about the 8mb, it may suffice. But Burnproof is wonderful. I've only gotten 1 or 2 coasters in God only knows how many burn sessions with a Teac 16x.

At 16X the drive needs a sustained transfer rate of 2400 KB/sec. At that rate an 8meg buffer will hold out for about 3.4 seconds. Not bad, but not great either. With BurnProof, the CDRW can just pause the burn until more data is available, leaving only a small 23 micron gap in the CDR between where the laser left off the burn and restarted it. CD players are designed to ignore gaps smaller than 60 microns or so, according to what I read.

I think BurnProof is a superior technology to pure buffering.

I sent my Yamaha 16x back, nothing but problems with it, the 8meg buffer does not guarentee you will not get a coaster. It unloads to quickly.
I purchased a TDK and couldn't be happier, not a coaster yet, gotta love that burnproof.

Go with the BurnProof.

Even with an 8MB buffer, it's possible to get coasters...say when your hard drive is asleep, and then hogs the IDE bus when it spins up...often it can take the 4 seconds that an 8MB buffer can hold...creating a coaster.

I say go with both. The Yamaha 20x has both buffer underrun prevention and an 8meg buffer, so that you'll generally have perfect CD's. With the 8meg buffer, it'll rarely have to create a link, and unlike other 20x and above burners, it doesn't intentionally link as it speeds up the write. Read all about this at Hardware One. But if you are set on the 16x ones, definately Burn-proof.

i couldnt agree more. Burnproof rocks. Larger buffers are just more expensive and a waste of moeny. get burnproof and you won't get BURNED... hahaha i sound really gay.
