Have you installed any software recently before you started having this problem?

use a boot disk/disc and start the computer with CD-ROM support. If the cd-rom does not work in DOS you have a faulty cdrom and need to replace it. if it does work it is more than likely a problem inside of windows. Try to update your cdrom firmware if possible.

I had this same problem awhile back, and it turned out to be a corrupt registry.

A total re-format and re-installation of Windows fixed it. I think it happened when I overclocked the CPU more than it was capable of:(

You're not running XP and Easy CD Creator version 4 or earlier are you? If so that can definitely be this problem but there is a fix, LMK if that's your scenario and I will look for the steps taken.

Older versions of EZCD and Nero will cause this in Windows XP. It happened to me with Nero. You can install an update patch to make the CD burner software compatable or you can use system restore to go back to a time when your drives were accesible.

This happened in my system when I had installed an update to Nero(about 6 months back). The registry got corrupted. The fix was on Microsoft's website regarding the cd-roms showing with an exclamation point. Nero released another patch really fast to resolve this issue. I had to re-install WinXP a few times until I figured out that Nero was causing this problem. I know the latest verion of Nero 5.5.8.2 does not cause this registry corruption.
