CD ROM problems

My Acer 50X cd rom, is giving me lots of problems. Whenever I try to read any cdr it gives me problems, once I put the cd in the tray It makes funny noises, a tapping sound, these cds worked on my friends drive.
Is there anyway to clean my CDROM drive, I think it is because of dust.
Please reply soon.🙁

You could possibly fix the drive but for the hassle involved when compared to the cost of getting a new one, I don't think its worth it. You've had 2 years service from it, which is pretty good for a CDROM (mine usually last about 8-12 months 🙁).

Besides, even if you did fix it chances are it will die again, sooner rather than later.

I don't intend to buy a new one, I need to get this fixed, I'm thinking of changing to WINDOWS XP from windows 98 se, must be some driver problem I hope.

if trying to sort out your cdrom problem by doing the above, I fear you're going to be sadly disappointed.
if you can afford to get XP then you are surely able to afford a new drive!

what afford, I'm installing from a friends copy, I'm a high school student, u ppl with the jobs and all buy Windows XP, i'll get it from friends.

Please don't chage the topic about pirating and all now, please.

I just need to get this cd rom drive fixed.

No one is giving proper suggestions here.

Please help.

You say "nobody is giving proper suggestions", yet your idea of going from Win98 to WinXP to solve the problem is..? LOL! Let's get real for a moment here..

It =sounds= like your CD-ROM is "dying".. One way to check this would be to install it into your friend's PC, using the same IDE connector that he has his CD-ROM on (just disconnect his for a moment) and see if it works.. If it doesn't, you can be SURE that your CD-ROM has died.. Can cleaning it POSSIBLY fix the problem..? I suppose that COULD be the problem, but I tend to doubt it.. You can get some cleaning kits for your CD-ROM, but it's possible that you are just throwing away your money on something that might not fix it.. CD-ROM's today are so cheap that I have a hard time understanding how you can't afford one.. Get a used one if you have to -- what will it cost, $10..?

Others, let's start up a collection perhaps, let's call it the "Buy micraft a new CD-ROM fund"..

Get a cd, cdrom, PS2, or whatever cleaning kit from any store around town. They're cheap. If it doesn't solve your problem, then it will probably cost you more to fix it from a technician.

ie. If you pay $40 minimum to fix an old 2 year old cdrom, it will probably fail again and you could probably buy a new cdrom which is faster and has a warranty. My ex gf had a 4x cdrom in her old machine and it just stopped reading cds cause the laser was out of allignment. She blamed me and wanted it fixed, I said screw it and bought a new one cause there's less hassle and price. Why make yourself more trouble than it's worth?

You might not have alot of bucks cause you're young, but what are you going to do? If it doesn't work, unless you're a tech who knows what he's doing, I wouldn't try fixing it yourself. Save up your pennies and buy a new one or ask for one for a b-day, or whatever. Hehe Shouldn't you be in class now?

Have you thought about XP having to be "activated"?

Anyway, back to your Acer... You could try flashing the firmware for it to make it work better. 🙂
