CD Rom Problem on boot

When I boot my computer the light on my DVD rom starts flashing like crazy. I can't open the tray, it's not detected by the bios. It's worked for over a year and I haven't changed anything. I tried unplugging it, then plugging it back in. I tried making it slave and my RW master. Tried switching power cables, switched slot on the IDE cable. Every once in a while after one of these changes it boots normally, but then after restart it will go back to the crazy flashing. It's an old toshiba dvd rom if that helps.

It sounds like it is dying. I have seen this symptom with ATAPI devices many times. Looks like it's time to replace it with one of the new 16x models.
