CD-ROM not working

The drive is an Afreey 56x IDE CD-ROM. Behaves as normal. I put in a cd and it spins up and scans it but then when I try to access the drive, it doesn't see any disc in there and tells me to insert one. I have had this drive about 4 years now so it is possible it could be dead.

BIOS + WinXP recognize the drive and set it up right. I have a CDRW in this computer and that works fine. I may try this drive out in my other computer and see if it is working ok in there.

Sounds like a bad CD-ROM drive. If it is four years old I think it has done its duty. And given the prices of optical drives nowadays it isn't too difficult to get a replacement.
