My computer is brand new, and everything was working fine until...

I needed to get a file off of a cd made by my other PC's burner. Since the CD was not full, it was not closed and it could only be read by Adaptec's Direct CD software. I installed Direct CD on my new PC (which does not have a burner) and after the reboot I found out that Direct CD would not work because it did not find a burner (it is probably only meant to work with HP cd writers). I also noticed that my cd-rom had disappeard in windows. I uninstalled Direct CD and still it didn't show up. Then I went into device manager and found that the cd-rom had a "!" beside it. I tried removing it, then reinstalling it, but this failed to fix the problem. I have no idea what to do now. I'm also new to Win2k.

AMD Athlon XP 1700+
256 PC-2100 DDR
Epox 8KHA+
MAXTOR D740X-6L 40GB
Visiontek Geforce 3 Ti200
Acer (Aopen) 52X CD-ROM
SB Live DE 5.1
Windows 2000

I hope I haven't already screwed up my computer

Any help is welcome, thanks.

Check the properties of your cdrom drive in Device Manager. You may have a problem with IRQ sharing. If that's the case, you'll have to manually assign it a irq.
Since you're using Win2K, check the Event Viewer in Administrative Tools for any error messages related to your cdrom.

Actually it has nothing to do with an IRQ conflict. It was working fine before. In Device Manager it says: "This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)

Click Troubleshooter to start the troubleshooter for this device."

The Troubleshooter just tells me to uninstall the cd-rom and then to reinstall it... that doesn't fix it. :(
