Posted this in Hardware forum as well. Just did a format and clean Win98se install. System was fine for a day, now the CD-rom tray will not close or stay closed. Button press does not work. If I power down and close the tray, as soon as I boot, tray opens again.

Any help appreciated.

I had the same problem with my old drive. I don't know if there's a solution. I ended up buying a new DVD drive to replace it. Wanted a DVD anyway. (That drive later broke too...but I have a nice Pioneer Slot-load now) Hope someone has a fix for you. The good news is that CD drives are cheap.

Is this a new system? If so are you sure you hooked up the cables in the back right? The ribbon cable usually takes the red line closest to the power connector. Also check your sound card cable make sure it is plugged in in the right spot/way.

Is your system over heating?

Good Luck

Thanks for posting...

The system is not new, and has been running flawlessly for about 18 months. I simply did a format of the primary HD and a clean install of the OS.

I did not even open the case, so I doubt it is the cables (also, the connectors/ports are keyed and the cables only go in one way.)

I am going to remove the drive, and then re-install it after one boot cycle to see if it is just a glitch.

Also, put a music CD or a data CD in the drive and see if that keeps the tray in.

Can't put a disk in it 'cause it won't close. The button push does nothing, and when I force the tray closed by hand, it closes and then pops right back out. Long day at work, I'll fiddle with it when I get home.

my friend got this problem at our last LAN with his CD burner, he got repaired it by a technician, it costed a little 28$ (canadian). I don't remember the problem but still it can be repaired.
