I am attempting to install an application on a rig I just built, it was basically a computer put together from a bunch of spare parts from other machines. The app is a multi-cd install. And the installation process goes very slow and often stalls. Sometimes saying that it cant read a file from the CD or the wrong CD is in the drive. When I pull the CD's out they are very warm, I figured maybe the drive is too hot to function properly, so I put the CD in the freezer for a couple of minutes, cooling it off. Then when I put the CD back in the drive, the install process continued along just fine, only to slow to a crawl and eventually throw up an error a few minutes later.

I had the drive in my main rig for about 3 years and never had a problem with it. My main rig was a P3, and now its in an Athlon 950 setup. I've noticed the AMD runs quite a bit hotter than the Intel setup, but thought it wasnt hot enough to cause any problems. The heat is my only guess as the cause of the problems right now. Is it the heat? or do I have other problems?

Drive's bearings are probably toast. Too much heat causes friction, and also generally causes instability. Either that, or something is very wrong, if your system is so hot that it's cooking your optical drives. After three years though, depending on the build-quality of the drive, it's probably due for replacement anyways.

Double-check the RAM though, with MemTest86+. If the rig was newly-built, your install problem might not be the warmth of the CD drive at all.

good idea about the memory test, as I just put a stick of Ram in that I bought from FS/FT forum. I hope thats not the problem. I wil test it asap. Tommarow im going to re-arrange the drives and install another fan for better airflow.
