I have to buy a burner for my brother...I put together a list of the deals starting tomorrow. It makes it easier than to look for the scanning down the excellent compilation list that has been posted.

Best Buy- 7am-noon
Pacific Research 16x $79 -20mir -30mir=$29

Best Buy-till sunday
Yamaha 20x $149-20mir -30mir=$99

CompUsa -friday and saturday
HiVal 16x $79-10mir -30= $39

CompUsa -till sunday
Que 24x $129-20 instant -30mir=$79

Offic Depot- till sunday
Sony 16x $129-30mir=$99

Circuit City- 7am-10am
Pacific Digital 16x $109- 10instant -50mir=$49

Circuit City till sunday
Iomagic 16x $79 -30mir=$49

If I was to go the cheap route (under $49 after rebates)....which of these low end brands are ok?

If I got the higher priced route...which is better, the sony, yamaha or que?

Comparing all these drives is difficult...

I would say... the best bang for buck is prolly the BB deal... $29 bucks for a 16X drive is great price!... however who knows what drive you are 'really' getting...

If you're interested in Sony burners check Staples.com. They have 4 different models that have $30 rebates. Use a coupon and you might make out ok.

The nice thing about the BB drive - it comes with Nero (worth more than the 30 by itself), not the crappy easycd that my computer hates...

ok, went and got the pull tags from the car
20034277 is the i/o magic 12x10x32
comes with nero and has a 4mb buffer
20020031 is the iomega 12x10x32
these have burnproof/smartburn, but comes with acraptec not-so-easy
but some are plextors, do a search for sept 1967's post about a previous deal with this burner at om or liz reed's @ compusa
plextors are gone from my area afaik, nothing but sanyo left
no idea yet what 20018954 is

edit: "The nice thing about the BB drive - it comes with Nero (worth more than the 30 by itself), not the crappy easycd that my computer hates..."
i agree completely, but isn't digital research owned by hi-val/io magic? or vice versa... in any case, i have heard much rebate bellyaching about them... plus that's a double rebate deal
to each they own :)

Staples has the 16x/10x/40x Pacific Digital drive with rebate on their site now. The price doesn't have the $10 instant savings (might be B&M only) but you can probably get it adjusted at a staples B&M.

Use a 20 off 100 coupon to get it for $90 + tax - 50 MIR = $40 with no waiting in lines or fighting the crowds.
Pacific Digital 16x10x40 CDRW
$50 Rebate

The Yamaha comes with NERO 5.5, NERO toolkit and about 6 other software packages. Also it has an 8MB buffer. A little noisy, but so far has worked great for me.

YES! The Staples Deal is pretty HOT if you can apply additional coupon !!

But do they allow $10 instant savings AND allow using coupon..

Wondering... since I actually picked up one of these last week at $109.

Going there today for PM!

I opened my digital research drive from BB - NO NERO!!! It came with some crappy NTI burning software. I called the company (dig research) but no one was in. PLUS - it's only being recognized (by NTI or nero trial) as a 4x burner. Not a happy camper here... Digital research better satisfy me fast or this drive is gone.

Dboy You bought a drive from a company called digital research, but you seem surprised by the lack of quality.

I guess your doing the research for them now.

The Iomega rebate is $30.00 not $50.00 the $50.00 is for the 16x.

Here is the Rebate
If You really want the sony New egg had a 24x OEM drive for 94.00 here

I know it oem but that is a good price.

I wasn't expecting the best, but I DO expect something to work as the box/website say! And the only reason I bought it at all was it came with Nero - I was bascially getting nero cheap and a free drive :) That is, if it had COME with nero...

There is an iomega rebate for $50 on the 12x also. Just look around these forums a bit and you will find it.

My Digital Research burner from BB has the same NTI software and the drive is the Lite-on LTR-16102B. Box says drive has BURN technology. According to the warranty card, Digital Research is part of I/O Magic.
