I'm not sure on quality, but CDEx is number 1 as far as ease of use goes. Multi-format support, one-click extraction for multiple tracks, CDDB support... it's pretty nice.

If your PC has 2 CD drives you can rip 2 cds at once with EAC/Lame. Set the options to auto open the drive when done and then just put a new cd when you see the drive open. I have an older pc which does this when I'm on my main machine. Often 10-12 cds in a row. CDDB support. Absolutely perfect copies. 2 drawbacks; 1 you really need to be computer literate to set it up. 2 not the fastest ripper around, but the quality more than makes up for the slower speeds.

my .03 cents

Sorry!
I'm a bit of an amateur when it comes to all this.
What's does "Ripping" mean?

Why wold you need to encode?

Sorry for the dump questions.

Jes

"Ripping" means pulling the audio from the CD into a WAV file on your computer. (CD audio basically a WAV file written on the CD in a specific manner) Sometimes the term also encompasses an immediate conversion to a compressed file format, such as mp3 or Ogg.

Yep, I use EAC with LAME, and here's how I do it.

Configure EAC to rip to WAV files, each file named in the format I want (using CDDB to get the names of each track). I then rip HUGE batches of CDs to a BIG honkin' hard drive. This saves time for the user in the long run. Do as many CDs as possible. Make sure you rip each track into the same folder.

When you are done now you enrypt them using Lame in a batch. You can now walk away - no waiting for track to encode. The only time u spend on the PC is ripping..

Good luck actually figuring out my method without step by step though.

haha - JERK!! j/k

another vote for EAC+LAME. I never thought of ripping a huge batch jnmunsey. Seems like the ripping takes every bit as long as the encoding, if not more... Maybe there's a better drive for ripping than my old 32x LiteOn CDRW with C2.

EAC/Lame, much coolness there. EAC pulls good audio tracks off nasty looking CDs that have been on the floor of the car, stuff like that.

Currently using CDex here. It does what I need to my satisfaction so I don't feel the need to try anything else.

I use the Windows Media Player 10 to rip. It is so easy. It seems that you guys don't use it. Is there a problem with this one that I'm not aware of?

Well it's Microsoft for starters....

I seem to recall that it forces DRM down your throat, not to mention that WMA is by no means a superior audio codec, nor is WMP 10 even equal to say Lame VBR in terms of encoding.

Bottom line, it's horridly inferior. Aside from that it's great. 😛

Man, okay.... What is DRM? WMP10 will let you encode in mp3 with various sound quality setting, as well as wma. I use mp3 with 320kb/sec. If DRM is some stuff that I don't want, but is forced to have it because it is microsoft, then I'll switch.
