i know this is not really software related, but anyone have any ideas between the house-brand and name-brand of cd-rs? Do they even matter that much?

Brand doesn't really matter, but what you want to stay away from are green-colored CDRs (green on writable/bottom side). I usually get 100 CD spindles from Costco, and there's usually a rebate that brings them down to about $0.25 each. Good discs that I've never had a problem with. I've had good results with Verbatim, Maxell, Memorex, and lots of others. Just stay away from green dyes...

Look for Fuji and HP branded cdr's made in Japan which is the most important thing as the cds then use TY die.

Here's another recommendation for Fuji CD-R's that come in a spindle. They say "Made in Japan" on them.

I'm not sure if this applies to all drives, but Kenwood's "TrueX" drives had trouble reading dark dye. I've also found that in practice light/clear dye CDs are more readable in more drives than the dark green/dark blue dyes. I've also found that clear dyes play nicer with car CD-players (which are notoriously picky anyway.) FWIW...
