Under System Properties->Device Manager->CD-R properties (Plextor 8/4/32A)->settings

Should the DMA box be checked?

if your drive will support DMA, it should better performance, just check it and restart, if the option stays checked, your supported, if it's unchecked, your drive probably doesn't support DMA

Did a little searching on cnet as to what DMA meant exactly, I can't believe I never knew this stuff before! I enabled DMA on my 75GXP and geez, it's much faster now. Stupid me :eek:
Thanks for the help guys, sorry for the bother.

System Properties->Device Manager->Disk Drives->Generic IDE Disk TypeXX ->settings

At least that's what mine is.

NotoriousJTC, in the old days (read Win95) Device Mgr. would identify your hard drive brand, now Win98 etc. simply identifies as a Generic Disk Type 46 or 47.

fivespeed5, Plextor recommends in their manual that you enable DMA for the 8/4/32 CD-RW drive. Enough said <g>.

Plextor recommends that you run with DMA

Yamaha recommends you run without DMA..not sure why but they do..

Not always Jeff... 98 recognizes my Maxtor and WD HDs and doesnt say generic. Although that might be because Im using ATA100 which Windows treats as SCSI for some reason.

Dulanic, don't you just love the consistent nature of Win9x <g>? Everytime there appears to be something that's consistent, someone else has the exception. And MS wonders why people scratch their heads over much of the software they put out there.
