Hi! I plan to transfer all our videos on VHS to CD-Rs. I'll be storing the VHS' and be using the CDs as everyday use. Which brands are reliable?

Imation
BenQ (Acer)
Sony

Also, the black CDs look tight. Is their any drawback to this pigment? Does it affect the CDs reliability? Thanks!

I used to swear by Maxell and Sony (I have heard Sony's are just rebranded Maxwells)... Then I couldnt find them cheap anymore, so got some HP's... those were pretty good, never experienced any problems with it...

Most of the online CD-R review sites prefer media made by Taiyo Yuden. They make media for a number of different companies but to be sure, Fuji brand is almost always made by them.

Most CD-R media is made by them, Ritek, CMC or Mitsui. Mitsui's are good if/when you can find them. CMC is crap. Ritek used to be crap but they have been making decent stuff for the past year or so.

Usually, if the media box/spindle says "Made In Japan", it is either Taiyo or Mitsui and you can't go wrong either way.

I've been buying my media from Kodak's website, the quality is good and the price is right. I also use the Fugi branded Taiyo Yuden, 50 pc spindles are cheap enough at CompUSA and it's also great media.

I've never had any problems with Maxell, so I stick with them.

I buy whatever is cheap. Usually the $30 for 100 w/ 30 rebate or similar. I've not found any dud's yet. I've used Maxell, Memorex, Imation, Fujifilm, Nashua, Sony & Verbatim. All have given me great results.

I use 100's of Unbranded Generic Grade A media and have only ever had one problem CD, and with that one it was only 1 of 15 files that was not fully readable.

Ok! Thanks for the inputs! :) Guess i'll be getting Imation as thats whats cheap and readily available here.

I still need to know though if the black pigmenting on CDs makes them less reliable or if theres any real effect to the media. Anyone?
