I'm having a problem with my Plextor 16/12/40 drive when trying to use blank CD-R media.

When I load it with my CD-R media, and double click on the drive, it says

I:\ is not accessible
Incorrect Function

I have a KT133A, Tbird, Win2k, SP3 installed (didn't work with sp2 either), 4in1s installed, all critical updates installed.

It never used to do this before, EVER. But it started last week some time, so I installed WinXP and it the problem went away... but I don't like XP (mouse issues) and so I went back to win2k a few days ago. Now that I'm back in Win2k, the problem is also back.

Has anyone had this problem before? Any input would be appreciated. The drive can read regular cds fine, and even burned cds, It is just having issues with blank cd-r media, even though it never did before say... 2 weeks ago. It isn't different media than what I used to use before. This problem just sorta sprung upon me, and now it wont go away.

Any ideas?

Sorry for the post in hardware forum, didn't know there was a tech forum.

Are you saying that when you insert a "blank" cdr goto "My Computer" and click on the drive to open it up you get that error ?

If so then that is normal as you have a disk that doesn't contain any date whatsoever , very similar to a hard drive that hasn't been formatted .

Personally I wouldn't worry about it unless your getting reading/burning errors .

I am unable to burn anything. That is how I managed to get that error in the first place. Nero would say something like along the lines of insert a cd to record to. Same with Fireburner. It is because of that that I tried to just double click on the cdr drive in my computer... which lead me to that error. I figured that error would be more telling than what nero said, because again... it was as if it didn't know there was already a cdr media disk in there.

Did you isntall or un-install any software around the time that you started having problems with burning with Nero/Fireburner ?

I wouldn't think this would be an issue but worth checking ,have you tried un-installing and re-installing Nero and Fireburner ?

Did you try upgrading the firmware on it ?

Have you tried un-installing the drive in your device manager and rebooting ?
