Can someone tell me what the tops of the TDK's look like? I like to put white labels on my discs, so if they have huge logos and crap that will show though - I'm not interested.

For example - Imations and Fujifilms are just silver-gray topped even though they have a logo they do not show through.

For some reason with Riteks when burned over 16x with my Plex 48x, my Apex dvd player doesn't like them, but audio burned at 48x it reads fine!

My Apex DVD player doesn't like CMC discs, but does great with Riteks (for video that is...audio is less of a problem). Perhaps it has more to do with whether our burners like the disc and can record on them well, rather than our Apex DVD players. Sounds like Plextor drives simply don't do well with Ritek discs. My LiteON burner chokes on InfoDisc high speed CD-RWs when these discs do fine on other burners.

The TDKs have no label, just the usual frosted silver coating with a few squiggles and the TDK logo, small. You won't see it through your paper label since the contrast with the rest of the disc is low. I hope I'm making sense here.

Got my 100 TDK CDs from Staples today. Thanks. Picked up a Staples brand, 25 pack of colored slim jewel cases on sale for $4.44 (was $8.88) as well.

I was relieve to find out they were Riteks.
I haven't burned any of the Philips CMC ones that I have but all this talk is leading me to observe the quality of burns now.

You use a program like CDRInfo or Smartburn and it will tell you who made your media.

I was at Circuitcity looking at HDTVs and happened to have a staples ad with me. So what I did? I asked if they price match to staples' TDK CDR deal, Manager was involved and she told the cashier to check if there is any rebates at CC. then they will match the after rebate price. know what? CC dont have a rebate so they pricematched to $4.94. Computer shows a 110% difference which would be $1.90 something lol. Cashier was shock to find out and ask another girl to help her out. she then said we'll just match it to the advertise price and will not include the 10% difference. Fine with me :D I walked out of CC with my bundle for $4.94 plus tax. no rebate hassle is well worth it. I love CC :)

TY (Taiyo Yuden) are considered the best media. You can look at the label and tell whether or not the CD's are TY - TY's are Made in Japan. Until recently, you could always count on FUJI media to be TY, but I've heard that some Fuji's are now Made in Taiwan (not TY's). If FUJI switches completely to the Made in Taiwan media, I'm not sure what brand you should look for.

It's dependant on who you get, because one of the managers at my local CC won't PM after rebate price.

It took me a minute to find the Staples deal:
TDK 100/Pack 700MB CD-R, Spindle

From that page:
Save $35 on TDK 100/Pack CD-R Spindle, 8/17-8/23 only! Reg. $39.95, special buy $24.94! Then use $5 coupon code 79910 at checkout, and redeem the $15 rebate attached. Final price is $4.94!

I don't remember ever seeing a "coupon code" (for 5 bucks, in this case) being listed within a Staples web page.
Some marketing genius testing how sharp eyed how many people are?

Hmm! Don't remember Staples ever putting a coupon code directly on the page! :)

Did you get free shipping even though you were under $50?

It seems like Staples is using coupon codes for instant rebates now. It prevents people from stacking other coupons with FAR stuff and getting $200 worth of stuff for nothing but tax. Fortunately, Officemax doesn't do this yet. :)

So out of curiosity - if the box says Made in Japan on the Fuji's or TDK's, is it safe to assume that they are TY's?

Is it also safe to assume that if it says anything other than Made In Japan, that they are definitely not TY's?

Verbatim DataLife Plus CD-Rs are very good too, but not easy to find. Target usually has them and occasionally puts them on sale at $10. for 50. straight up.
The last time was a 30 spindle for $7. It's been some weeks w/o Verbatim on sale so should be comiing up soon.
