CD-R corruption in win2k! Help Please!

Man! I know this sounds weird! I'm feeling smoked, win2k is on crack or something!

Problem:
I have lots of CD-Rs with data inside (of course).
I swear those CD-Rs are working, cause I always test them after burning them. Pop them into the CD drive. Tried to open a file, and win2k gives me an error saying my disk structure is corrupted and the disc is unreadable!!! I cannot even copy any files to HDD. CD-Rs don't rot right? Anyway, I tried it on another win2k machine. Same thing, no go. Lastly, I tried it on a win98 machine. Bingo .... it worked falwless in win98. I was able to copy and read the file!

What's up with win2k?! My dreams of a dream OS is smashed! : (
I really hope this doesn't mean going back to win98!

I have a dual boot system. The CD drive is 2 month's old anyway. On the win2k side, it gives me the error. But on the win98 system it's fine. And this is a non-VIA Pentium system.

My other system is a VIA-Athlon system, 4-in-1 4.31 drivers installed, win2k with sp2. I never experienced anything this weird on win98 before. sigh ...

What CD-R software are you running?

I will Easy CD Creator 4.03. The thing is, a CD is READ-ONLY right? So if it works in Windows 98, why doesn't it work in Windows 2000 (using the same CD-ROM drive!) Unless Easy CD Creator works some stuff on the CD that makes it unacceptable in Windows 2000? That's kind of weird. If I am not wrong, CDs have their own universe file system, CDFS.

I tested the CD in Windows 98. Opened every single file. Tried to copy files to the HDD. My files are okay (no corruption at all). It was able to be copied onto harddisk. On the same machine, same CD-ROM drive, but in Windows 2000, all I can see are the files in Explorer. But when I try to copy them to harddisk or open them. It keeps telling me my Disk Structure is corrupted and thus unreadable!

Please give me some clues if any of you has something. Thanks.

Try removing Easy CD and reinstalling it without Direct CD.

Ok heres the deal is your cd-r, rw compatible with Win 2000? You should really check the manufacturers website for drivers. but before you go there pop over to Microsoft and check out the latest Hardware Compatability List (HCL)

Since your drive works fine in 98 I would balmost bet the bank that it is not supported in Win 2000 or if it is it requires an additional set of drivers

And yes, the dye layers on CD-R and CD-RW do in fact rot especially if you store them in sunlight. The rates vary depending on the type of dye that was used in your particular brand but they usually last at a minimum of 10 yrs if the dye is of the el cheapo type CDR/RW. CD-R DYE ARTICLE

Thanks for your help, people. But sadly, none of your solutions work. Because I tested my CDs on a machine that came with a brand new CD-ROM drive. It has no CD-RW drive. Thus no Easy Creator installed. The CD-ROM drive is definitely compartitable with Win2k. Afterall I installed stuffs on Win2k with that drive.

However, I have noticed a pattern! I am starting to believe Win2k's message of "corrupted disk structure"! Let me explain. I noticed that all my CD-Rs that refuse to work in Win2k had a similar layout. They only contain one folder, and inside the folder there are several big files (all .pdfs). Of the CD-Rs that worked in Win2k, they either had more than one folders or one folder with some files outside the folder. This definitely sounds weird! I wish I have a fast connection and a server so that I can send an ISO image of the CD for you people out that to experiment! Recently, I have nothing to burn. But when I do, I am going to experiment with the layout again. I want to know if it's a Easy CD Creator bug or a Win2k bug in recognising certain layout.

I know it's weird! Hope you people don't think I'm smoking crack or something! LOL

I had some weird problem, too.
After going from Win98SE to Win2000 my copy ( ;-) ) of Half Life did not seem to have any data on it anymore. Since this is the only disc I had problems with, I am not sure, wether it is really damaged. But Win2K does not report the disc to be damaged, it even has its old name, there is just no data on it anymore!
Strange thing is, that I had installed the game a few days earlier on my Win98 system without probs.

This can become a serious problem... if you unistall Easy CD, and reboot you might not be able to see any of your CD Drives.
