I've been looking into some car CD players for the near future, and I've noticed that some specifically say they can read CD-Rs. I was under the impression that any CD player could read CD-Rs, was I correct?

well, yes. most new cd players are capable of reading cdr, unless it's an older generation cd player (15+ years old), which i doubt you'll even find one nowadays. see, those are one of those idiot spec listing that companies slap on their products to make them seem better equipped, although it's an obvious that all cdplayers are capable. :)

Unless it said it could read CD-RW. Not many can read them types of cd's. And that would maybe be a little bit of advantage but I wouldn't pay an extra just to have it read rewritable cds.

Let me tell you, all car CD player do NOT play CD-R's.

I went through 3 before i got one that did. I started with a high-end Panasonic (high-end for panasonic), then a stupidly expensive Alpine, and finally ended up with Eclipse.

Some Alpine's do, and some don't. The one I tried, we installed it at the shop without testing it because they didn't have one hooked up. Other alpines played my cd's okay, so we figured it would work. It didn't. I mean, it played some, but there were glitches and excessive skipping.

Anyway, you should have absolute no problem with CDR's with a deck designed to play mp3's.

Well yes, pretty much ever CD player can read CDR audio CD's.

However, only recently have players been able to read MP3's saved on CDR's. I don't know if this is what you meant, but the ability to play MP3's on CDR's is a BIG bonus :)

I don't have enough $$ for an in-dash MP3 player.:(

I'm only looking for a player that will play "normal" audio files.:)

I've read lots of good things about Pioneer. How do they fare with CD-Rs? If it matters, I've got the Plextor 12/10/32A, so burn quality shouldn't be that much of a concern.

Pioneer has always done will with CDR's. I'm not sure how they handle CD-RW's.

I have last years Pioneer and haven't had any trouble with my cdr's. And let me tell you, there are a lot of em for the car. Cruisin tunes are a must. But again, if you can bring in a cd you made and try it out first that would be a SUPERMAN!! Err, I mean super BONUS!

I have the DEH-4100 in my car and it plays my CDRs (Kodak Gold) without any problems. It's a good deck too, I like the remote that comes with it.
