CD/DVD Rom Read Error

I am having a problem and feel I have tried everything to fix it. I just re-installed XP and updated my BIOS. And I am still having this problem:

When I attempt to install a program from CD, for example Adobe Photoshop 6 the following screen appears to go normally:

And then after about 5 minutes, the step-by-step install will appear:

i have tried 2 different DVD drives, setting each one as master or slave.. using one at a time, changing the IDE cable and I still haven't found a solution.

My motherboard is an ASUS P4P800 SE.

Any help is appreciated.

Here are the results of a Nero CD-DVD speed test:

Well, the 2 screenshots are for 2 different programs. Could it be Acrobat Reader installs before Photoshop? I know Acrobat Reader can really bog down while installing /updating. Does Photoshop install at all?

Unfortunatly, i dunno what i can do to help you, but i am having a similar problem. With my new pc, i used a Benq DW1640, which seems to be one of the best DVD Burner's around atm. Mine reads everything perfectly, except the Asus Motherboards driver disc! As you can imagine, that is possibly the worst cd to not have working. I tested the cd on an older pc, and it worked fine, so it isnt the cd. The drive is still great, it has performed brilliantly at anything else iv got it to do over the last few days.

I dont have much to suggest 🙁, but in your case, since no cd is working, and you have tried two different drives, i would guess it is a driver issue. Cant be hardware problem because WIndows XP installed fine, so it must be a driver issue. Are you using the windows IDE drivers, or the ones bundled with the Asus mobo?

Let me know, and i may be able to help you out 🙂

I don't have the ASUS CD anymore, but I installed the Intel Chipset driver available at the www.asus.com driver page for the p4p800 SE. Where could I find ASUS drivers for the motherboard?

Programs I download to my hard drive (SATA) install perfectly, quickly, and as expected. Its only from the CD or DVD roms (IDE)

I am uncertain what you are asking. The first picture is after I double-click the install file. The second picture is 5 minutes after. (I know the screenshots are from 2 different programs.. the pictures are there just to explain what is going on)

The first is the installation unpacking itself, and it goes to 99 or 100, then the installer is full screen, and you go through the wizard, right?

Are programs failing to install all together?

Some programs, such as WoW error out and won't install because they say they can't find a file on the CD.. but the Adobe program , for example, takes 5 minutes to go between 100% unpacking (screenshot 1) and opening the installer (screenshot 2).

You should get the lasted stable bios for your mobo here: http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us

and then download the "Intel Application Accelerator" driver down the bottom of this page: http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us

If i where you, id do a clean install of Windows XP after you flash the bios (im assuming you havent done this). Then id try your cd's with the stock standard windows IDE driver. IF that works, then dont install the Intel ones. If it doesnt, try the "Intel Application Aceelerator" drvier i suggested above. It contains IDE drivers for your mobo, but you have not even need them.

Thanks, I havent installed the accelerator yet.

A weird thing I'm seeing is when I get properties of the IDE channel that my DVD rom is on, XP Device Manager states that it is Ultra DMA 2 .. is this correct?

Sounds OK to me.
very few IDE optical drives are any higher than UDMA2 (ATA/33)

Ok, well i found out, and stragly enough your chipset isnt supported by the application accelerator, so i do not know why ASUS list it as a download for your mobo. I have nothing more to suggest, apart from reinstall windows, and just try installing something off a cd with default drivers, instead of the ones that came with the mobo.

As for the IDE controller being set in Ultra DMA 2 mode for your DVD Rom, i think that is perfectly normal, although you can normally set it on auto it choses the right connection. I checked the settings on my IDE controller, and it was set to Ultra DMA 2 mode for my DVD Burner too. I wouldnt worry about that, i havent seen enough pc's to guaranty this, but i think all DVD Roms that are ata 33 (most of them) will operate in this mode.

Iv ran out of ideas, but good luck in fixing your problem 🙂

Thanks for the help INM8.

Oyeve: Yes programs install from the Hard Drive (SATA) just fine. The best way to describe my problem in a few works is "Sluggish IDE performance". Last night I changed every possible setting in the BIOS pertaining to IDE in every way possible and still no luck.

Could this be a p4p800 SE issue that just not many people spoke up about?

I actually tested the burner. The Burner BURNS a disc fine, however it also has problems with installing programs slowly. The other drive (DVD-Reader) also has problems installing programs.

I'm ready to throw in the towel. I've been up past 1 am four nights this week w/ this computer... If you search google for 'p4p800 IDE problem' there are apparently other people who have fixed this problem.. 🙁 🙁

Holy Smokes!! Update! I just started XP in Safe mode without networking and the DVD drive functions correctly..

does this mean the onboard LAN is causing this problem???

Another Update: I disabled the onboard LAN in BIOS and I am still experiencing the sluggish IDE performance.

Next step: I'm gonna install XP and verify that the CD rom works on a base XP install and then install one driver at a time to try and pinpoint the problem 🙁 - Thank you captain ASUS /sarcasm.
