CD & DVD drives not working?

Everytime I turn on my computer, my optical drives will not work. I go to My Computer and both drives don't show. So basically I can't play or burn CDs and DVDs
I went to device manager and both drives are showing with the following message:

Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)

I didn't install anything or uninstall anything prior to this, and I was watching dvds and burning cds just fine yesterday. What could be the problem for this? I tried opening my computer to see if the cables were loose but they weren't.

I'm using yamaha crw-f1 cd burner and hp200i dvd burner. What could be the problem? Is it the motherboard? or is it the drives? Any help will be greatly appreciated guys!

Thanks in advance.

By the way, the BIOS shows the drives just fine. Some more info: I'm using XP Pro, I've done all the critical updates. Any help is really appreciated guys 🙂
Thanks a lot!!!

I have found that when this happens it typically is a ribbon cable going bad....have you tried a new cable on them??

This has happened to me and some friends a few times. Basically, something about the burning software (Nero I think?) that causes some sort of problem with WinXP's registry.

Please be careful when doing this. And research it a little to make sure it's the same problem:

Go to the registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

And delete the keys: "UpperFilters" and "LowerFilters"
