cd/dvd drive

This may be insulting/dumb question, but hwo sure are you that they sent you a dvd player. They make CD/RW burners that look exactly same

Could just be a defective drive too; my sister's laptop drive was a CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo. At some point, it just wouldn't see CDs in the drive at all - DVD's worked fine. One theory was that the hardware, perhaps the laser itself, for reading CDs was dead, but the DVD portion still worked. Maybe your drive has a similar problem?

Correct! Such drives have two laser lenses, and it is possible for the DVD one to be defective or dirty. If the drive is new, I would suspect defective. A good test would be to swap it for a similar known good drive temporarily to see if it works OK - just to eliminate any possible driver or software problem.

Sounds like it needs to go back to the source.
