CD-DVD Drive bogging my computer

Hey guys,

There is something wrong with my cd-rw/dvd drive in my laptop that everytime it is working hard (ie installing a game, dvd ripping), my cpy utilization jumps to 100% and winamp starts to skip,, the computer slows significantly. DMA is enabled if available but it seems that the drive is only PIO compatible. Anything else that I should check to fix this? BTW, Iam running XP-SP2 on a Presario 1500 Laptop (P4 2.2ghz & Intel 845mp chipset). I think this is an SP2 issue, since I dont remember having this problem before SP2, but that is too strange.

Thanks

Did the drive do this before installing SP2? The PIO mode is definitely why it's slowing everything down. Now you just have to find the source and correct it. New mobo/IDE drivers?

I think that if the drive reports several read errors, as it might do if the CD is dirty or scratched, then WinXP will throttle-down the IDE ports to PIO mode. I noticed that on one of my CD-ROM drives recently. Rather annoying feature. 🙁
