CD Drives Have Gone Missing!

I searched for a similar topic as best I could, but alas...

I recently upgraded my parents computer. It used to be an Emachines, but my brother and I gutted it replaced all the internals with the following:

Evercase 350W PS
DFI AD70-SC Motherboard
AMD Duron 1.0GHz
256MB Kingston PC2100 DDR
TNT2 M64 AGP
Netgear NIC

The only leftovers were:

3 1/2 inch drive (from emachines)
Matshita 8x4x32 cd burner (aftermarket)
8 gig HD (from emachines)

The computer is running windows xp. Everything on it seems to be running well, but both cd drives are missing from windows explorer and my computer. They are listed in the device manager, but windows indicates that both drives have missing or incorrect drivers. They worked right after the installation of XP, but after a couple of days, they disappeared.

How do I get them back? I've looked everywhere and have not found a solution. Is reinstalling the only option I have? I would be greatful to anybody that has alternate solutions to this problem, rather than a full reinstall or repair from the WinXP installation CD.

Thanks in advance.

Did you by chance install NERO burning software for the CD burner? I installed a NERO demo version one time on XP Pro and my CD drives also dissapeared.

No, I only installed EZ CD Creator 4 and then promptly uninstalled when I realized it was going to cause stability issues with XP. I have uninstalled it to Roxio's specifications.

GonzoDaGr8,

I just had a guy today ask me about his CD drives disappearing when he installed Nero, What did you do ot get the drives to return.

Honestly, I never did get them to return. they showed up in the devide manager, but had the yellow exclamation points saying they were not installed. I tried uninstalling them so I could re-install, but when XP prompted for drivers it could not access the now gone CD drives (both of them). Since it was a fairly new install of XP, I ended up just formatting and starting over. I have not touched NERO since out of sheer fear of that happening again and am using EZCD 5.0 Platinum. I know that doesn't help you much, but that is what I had to do.

I'm personally using Nero 5.5.5.1 in combination with Windows XP with no problems at all. I don't mean to brag; just wanted to let people know that Nero will work (only problem is inability to write cd-text) with Windows XP.

I tried rolling the drivers back, but there were no drivers to roll back to. So the problem is still there. Any one with other ideas?
