I had a CD drive that just stopped scanning CD's, it would spin up then stop, so I took it out and put in a different one. It was okay for a while and now it has stopped working as well. This has annoyed me to no end because I have no idea what is causing it, and neither does anyone else, it seems. It was working fine yesterday.

I haven't changed anything recently apart from an audio driver update, I tried system restoring to see if that fixed it and it didn't. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the IDE controller with the first drive that stuffed up and that didn't help. Could there be something wrong with the IDE hardware on the motherboard?

about all you can do is check the data cable, try another one.
make sure the power conncection is in tight, or try aniother one

heck, its probably time for a new one anyways.......

it could be a powersupply issue? how old is the computer? how much more powerful is the CD-Rom? how many drives are you using?

i had a similar problem and i just found out that my PSU just couldn't support all the drives.

The pc was brand new in 2001, but I put in a new 400watt PSU last month. It is only running a floppy, 1 hard drive and the CD drive so it definitely should not have a power problem. The CD drive is quite old, not sure how old though.
