CD Drive won't play audio cds

I've got a p4 3.0 ghz and an intel d865gbf motherboard. Any time that I try to use the cd drive for a music cd, the machine freezes up, requiring a reboot. I have done just about everything I can think of and can still not figure it out. I have uninstalled the drive, reinstalled, gotten a new drive and received the same problem, flashed the bios, done all windows upgrades. I also tried to do a system restore, but this has also not worked. The machine recognizes the restore points starts the process, then after rebooting, I get a message saying that the restore was unsuccessful. Any helps or suggestions would be appreciated.

did you connect your audio wire from your cd rom to soundcard?

Yes, the audio cable is plugged in

how about a clean install of OS?

Pulled a clean install and still had the issue. I must have been half asleep when running some of the checks because I found out that the option was checked for digital output only. Once that was uncheck, everything works again. Thanks for everyone's help
