I recently upgraded from win98 to win2k and also installed powerdvd4.0. Not sure which one caused the problem, but the CD drive becomes extreeemely slow when reading even a small file of several hundred k. It keeps making the kind of noise as if it's trying very hard to read files. I reboot to Linux, problem still exists. I tried to turn off DMA from both win2000 and the bios, no good. The cd drive and the cd are both tested ok on other computers. So what could be the problem now?
I remember after installing the system, I poked around on the mother board just to make sure all the connections are tight. After that, the computer refuse to power up. With one blink of the power light, it went dead very soon. Afterwards, it wouldn't even respond to the power button anymore untill couple of minutes later, again, with a blink, it went silent. Mysteriously, the second morning, it boots back on all right again. Not sure if this got anything to do with the Cd drive? Could I have killed the motherboard, even though the overall system works fine?
