Hey.

I pulled out my cd drive from my computer while it was on, it crashed, and now after replacing the cd drive everytime my compie boots it asks for a boot disk in the cd drive, and will only boot after i put in an XP installation disk that it can boot from. It doesnt boot from the disk, it just says press any key to boot from disk and when i dont it boots normally. The cd drive isnt listed as a boot device in the bios, so what should I do?

you may have damaged the drive or controller by removing it while on. Try having just the hard drive attached (remove power and cable from the other drives), reset the cmos, power it up, go into bios and set the hard drive as the first boot device. See if it boots up. It should boot up fine with just the hard drive. If the cdrom is not shown as a boot device, then it is not seen by the bios, indicating it is dead, or connected wrong.

When I said the cd drive wasn't in the bios, I meant that I didnt have any cdroms selected as boot devices in my bios. The only boot device is set as the hard drive. Despite this, it still asks for a boot disk in the cd drive. After I put in an XP disk, it says 'press any key to boot from disk' and when I do not press a key, it then skips the cd and boots windows normally. But windows will not boot normally unless there is an XP cd in one of the drives. I have also tried all 3 of my cdroms in windows, and they all seem to work fine. What could be the problem? Would resetting my bios help?

I resetted the bios, and the problem is exactly the same as before. On a side note, if I disable "boot from other device" in my bios, it won't try to boot from the cdrom and just asks for a system disk to boot from. When this happens, it doesn't matter if the cd is in or not as it cannot find any disks to boot from.

Didn't fix it. Reinstalled windows over my current installation and now everything just runs a little slower on top of it not fixing the problem.

Try fixboot and fixmbr from the recovery console...maybe chkdsk while you are at it.
