CD drive not detected

I have an hp pavillion dv9700 laptop, and tried to use my cd drive yesterday and noticed that the icon is missing from "my computer" and it also isn't detected in the device manager. The drive is enabled in BIOS. I last used the cd drive on 12/31/10 and it worked just fine. I have uninstalled quite a few things recently, and tried to do a system restore back to 12/31 but was only able to go back to 1/18/11 which did not fix the problem. Anyone have any ideas what the problem could be??
 
Odds are...it died. I've had several die in the past year or so. Sony, Pioneer, Yamaha...doesn't seem to matter what brand they are...they just go.

The good news is that they're cheap to replace.
