cd drive disappeared

Hi,
I'm trying to help my bf deal with this weird computer problem. I am not very skilled at this stuff but he is even less, so the task of fixing this falls to me.
Anyway, apparently he was importing music from some cds he checked out of the library. He uses iTunes. He got to the 4th cd and there was an error message, but he doesn't remember what it said. The cd stopped. After that, he was unable to import music from the next cd. I checked under "My computer", and neither the dvd nor the cd drive were showing up. When I restarted the computer, the dvd drive showed up again. Still no cd drive.
Any advice is welcome! Thanks.

Right-click on "My Computer" and select "Manage". Now click on "Device Manager.

Find where it says "DVD/CD-ROM drives" and click the [+] icon. Tell me what you see listed there.

*Pay special attention to whether there is anything like a yellow exclamation point overlayed on one of the drives' icons.
