cd drive constantly opens and closes

I am in the middle of putting together an old system to be used for mandrake 9.1. While the computer is turned on, the cdrom drive constantly opens than closes. Does anyone have an idea as to what might be causing this?

If i close the drive it will open again by itself within 2-3 seconds.

It's not an OS problem, since it does it both while booting and when ME is loaded.

do you have a audio cable hooked up? If so try switching the polarity on it and see if it quits.

there is no audio cable hooked up.

Make sure that there is nothing blocking the drive tray from going right back home. Make sure that nothing is sticking in/out/up/down etc which would stop the tray from going right back. You might have knocked the front of the tray, and knocked it up a little on one side, which stops it going back.
