CD drive can't read CDR

I bought two drives, CL and samsung 42x
when i try to run CDR , the system just freezes, trying to read the cd.
same cd reads fine on other much older 32x NEC drive.
Is there something I can do?
those two drives are bought second handed so did I just get bad drives?

Not all Cdrom drives read CDR`s... 🙁 I have an old HP 8X that reads better than most newer drives so go figure...? I would dump the 42X and if the 32X reads them fine then use it where needed...

crappy cd-r media could also be the culprit, but I'm not sure what media you're using. just a thought.
