CD copying from 36x cd-r to 8x cdrw problem

I am trying to use adaptec(sp?) easy CD creator to copy a cd that I put in my CDrom drive (master) which is a 36x unk brand drive to my Philips (slave) 8x4x32x CDRW but when I try to copy it the software tells me that my CDrom drive is not fast enough to match my CDRW to copy it directly and that I have to move it to my harddrive 1st....This seems odd.

I have DMA checked off for the CDrom. I don't see why my 36x and my 8x can't relate to each other. Anyone have any experiences with this.

Anyone? This is really bothering me. I should be able to use Adaptec easy CD creator 4 to "copy" a CD. I was able to do this at 4x when I was using my USB CDRW.

Are they both on the same IDE channel, If so, try moving one to another channel. This should help you w/ your problem.

I can not move the CDRW to another IDE channel. I have 2 HDs on IDE0 and the CDrom and CDRW on IDE01.

Any other suggestions?

Could depend on alot of things...

1. Is it an Audio CD you are trying to copy? The Digital Audio Extraction (DAE) speed differs alot from drive to drive. For example, my old Samsung 32x is twice as fast as my newer LiteOn 52x when it comes to copying/ripping Audio CDs. Try turning "Disc at Once" off in the burning properties and use "Track At Once" instead. That way, all tracks are written independently. If you have a mixed CD with tracks that interweave, this might not be the best as you get pauses between each track. Also try and lower your recording speed to 6x and 4x.

2. What kind of components are you using? Alot of older computers simply can't handle the speeds you're demanding on the IDE channels. And plus, you have them both connected to the same channel (secondary I presume?). Master and slave devices on the same channel can't be read/written from/to simultaneously, therefore slowing down the process. I would recommend you to change your CD-ROM to be slave to your HDD instead.

Anyway, just some thoughts.

I would definately go w/ Basse's #2.... it should only take a couple of minutes..... oh and watch your jumper settings if you do it 😉

Wont having a CDrom and HD on 1st IDE cause a problem? I have read that it does. If I did that I would have Master HD and Slave CDrom on 1st IDE and then on Second IDE I would have master HD and slave CDRW. Would this worK? I will try your other suggestions 1st.

This stuff is on my Atlon 900 so it should not be a problem with the age of my system. It might work if I lowered the speed but I thought there would not be any problem with 32x to 8x. It is probably that they are on the same IDE that is the problem and I am trying to make a direct copy and it will only allow me to copy to HD 1st.

Thanks

I burn audio.....for backup purposes of course 😉 at 8x from a 48x cd rom drive. They're both on different channels and should work fine.

OK, I have this setup on my rig:

---------Master--------Slave---
IDE0:--HDD-----------CD-RW-----
IDE1:--HDD-----------DVD-ROM-

Benefits:
1. Because I occationally move large files from one HDD to another, I obviously benefit from having them on different channels (made a 20-25% difference on HDTach).
2. When making "backups" from DVD-ROM to CD-RW, I benefit in the same way.
3. My HDD on IDE1 is where I keep all my downloaded and back-up files, so I always read from it when I make a CDR.

You should consider the fact that if you have a DMA100 HDD, it will default down to DMA33 because of your CD-ROM or CD-RW. The channel always goes down to the lowest spec component on the IDE channel.

Good Luck🙂!

Base

Thanks for the advice. Going down to the DMA33 is not that big of a deal as my 2nd HD is DMA33 anyway so I will not be losing anything even though my 1st HD is DMA100. I may try the switch tonight.
