cd command in dos on win98

i need to run my halflife dedicated server update tool through dos on my old win98 laptop. all the half life files are on a seperate drive, d:, than the operating system, c:. when i open the command prompt, i try cd D:\Hlds but it won't change. i can't get it to change to the D: drive at all. anyone know why?

If you switch to D:, you'll see that the directory is already selected from when you had typed the CD command.

It's strange like that.
