CD coaster

I have been making coaster after coaster after coaster since many days. I have a 633ids Emachines with 192 MB RAM and a Philips 8x cd writer. I have been using adaptec cd creater 4.02.

I can burn the cd perfectly if I copy the image to the hard disk first.
If I am trying to burn cd directly from the cdrom drive without making an image on the hard disk first, the cd surely becomes a coaster.

Try recording at a slower speed. Could be your system is trying to write the data too quickly. You indicate that this problem occurs with CD to CD-R burns, but not if you create an image first. you did not specify, however, ithe result of a nard disk to CD-R burn w/o an image. (ie. copying misc. files from your hard drive to the CD-R) Do they react the same?

Just guessin here but your cd and cdr are probably on the same ide channel.. pay attendion to your screeen at boot up or go into your bios and see. if that is the case both on the secondary Ide one master the other slave.. you might wanna move one to the other ide

What speed are you CDRs rated for too...I bought some cheapo CDRs before that I thought were rated for 8X but come to find out they were only rated for 2X and I was getting the same problems you were...Coaster City. Also...have you tried Nero yet. I think its one of the best burn programs out there...never been much of an Adaptec fan!

to effectively burn cd to cd you need a real good cd drive to read from, i would always go to the hard drive for reliability
check for an option under cd to cd burning to make image on hard drive and burn from there

I agree, ALWAYS copy to the HD First, as opposed to 'On the fly' copies.
Also I posted this in another burning-related thread, about the latest ASPI Layer. Adaptec 4.x Versions have an outdated version as well.
I believe Roxio 5.x versions come with the latest version. The version in the link is the latest version that came out in september of '99.

Might not have anything to do with it, but try updating your ASPI Layer here or do a search on Google for ASPI CHK. Sometimes burners cause problems with the outdated ASPI Layer provided w/win95/98/2K/XP.

My cdr and cd writer are connected to the same ide. cd writer is in the master mode, and cdr in the slave mode. If I burn it from the hard disk directly without creating an image, there won't be any problem. I guess it is because of the same ide.

may be i can connect the hard disk and cd on one ide and cd writer on the second ide.

i have also downloaded ASPI. will try that first.

I didn't read all of the replies, but you may also want to try a demo of Nero or CDRwin to see if the problem persists. I have never been a big fan of EZCD as it has never actually worked quite as well as it should. I do recall back in the days when i did use EZCD, that I too was making coasters here and there.

I don't understand why everyone always suggests putting the CD-RW and and CD on different IDE channels. I always read/heard that you should try to keep your CD drive off the same channel as your primary hard drive, which is why most computer companies use the hard drive as Primary master and the CD as Secondary master. Compaq, IBM, HP, etc. all do this...or at least they did.

I have a 24x10x40 Buslink CD-RW drive (Lite-on) and a 16x Cendyne DVD drive (Lite-On) on my secondary IDE channel. The burner is master, the DVD slave. i have yet to have any problems with this configuration. before I picked these 2 drives up, I had a 2x2x24 Hi-Val burner and a 12x CD (not sure who made it). I used to make the occasional coaster with the old burner because of buffer underrun errors. Overall, though, I really didn't burn very many disks. Too time consuming. Had few problems once I learned how to avoid buffer underrun errors, though.... most of my copies were CD to CD on the fly.

Things on the same IDE channel have to take turns using the channel. A request to one device on the channel must be completed before a request to another device on the channel can be initiated. I think they tell you to keep the CD on a different channel from the hard drive so that when a program or Windows is running and you are using a CD drive, things don't slow down. The same goes for a CD and a CD-RW, though. If your CD-RW doesn't have burn-proof, the wait time while data is read from the CD on the same channel could add to your coaster collection. The solution, as others here have noted, is to put your hard drives on one channel and your CD and CD-RW on the other channel and burn from an image on your hard drive.

Please list your IDE devices.

I'm making a firsthand guess, but you'll have to correct me if I'm not right:

You have a HDD, DVD-ROM/CDROM and a CD-RW.

In such setup I'd connect the HDD as Primary Master, CD/DVD ROM as Primary Slave and CD Writer as Secondary master. Your second HDD should be master if you have one, then move CD writer to secondary slave.

Make sure you have the latest chipset drivers from eMachines.

Thanks. I have a 15 GB HDD, DVD-ROM/CDROM and a CD-RW.
I tried to connect as you guys advised, but my ide cables are not long enough. I will try to get a longer IDE cable tomorrow.
