CD burns freeze and fail, why?

Lite On SATA DVD-CD burner

I've used Nero 6 and 7, and every time I try to burn a CD, it gets to 31% and then freezes, requiring me to hard restart the computer using the case restart button

I don't know why 31% but it seems to be consistent

the drive will PLAY audio CDs just fine, the problem is with burning

I've tried "max" speed and "32x", same problem

there are two SATA hard drives in the system and two SATA optical drives (one reader and one burner), as well as one IDE hard drive

I'm not sure if I've set the master/slave jumpers correctly, would that be something to look at? or something in BIOS? or windows?

the motherboard is an ECS KA3 MVP "extreme", windows XP SP2

thanks, I've been wanting to listen to some new CDs and share music with friends and this is bogging me down

Is this a new drive? Did it ever work? Tried installing the latest firmware for your drive? Tried another burning application

thanks!

I ditched that bloatware piece of junk Nero (nothing but headaches all around) and got a different program called Cheetah DVD Burner, that works just fine and has a much leaner and easier interface

I also updated my firmware for good measure, thanks for the tip

hmmm well I'm still having trouble

it's a fairly new drive, I installed the latest firmware, it sometimes works, but when I've got firefox windows and media players open it will freeze in the middle of a burn. it's kind of unpredictable.

could it be a bad drive? or some kind of setting I've got messed up? any other ideas?

it was the hardware, the lite-on burner drive itself was bad. I guess next time I'll get the equivalent Plextor
