CD burning woes... Two systems, two media types, two different burners... WTF is going on?

OK, here's the situation:

Two systems:

Dual 1800+
512 MB
Seagate Barracuda IV ATA100
Plextor 24x10x40

AND

Pentium 3 733
384 MB
Quantum Fireball 7200 RPM ATA100
LiteOn 32x12x40

Two different 32X media types: KingPro & TDK. Also tried some 24X TDK.

All burning done with latest version of Nero (5.5.8).

We're testing by burning one 400 mb file & one 200 mb file to a CDR. Disc at once, finalize CD. The burn process completes successfully at 24X or 32X (depending on which burner we use, the plextor @ 24, the lite-on @ 32).

However...

When the files are copied back off the disc, Windows has a horrible time pulling them off. Estimated time is around 90 minutes to pull 600 MB off. When the CD's are burned at 16X the data will copy in a much more reasonable 4 minutes. An audio CD burned at 32X is currently playing perfectly on a PlayStation2, & it also worked correctly in my DVD player. But data CD's don't seem to work correctly, even though no errors are reported.

WTF are we doing wrong? Is the media at fault? Surely 32X media should burn at 24X? Especially in a good quality burner (my Plextor). The 24X TDK results are the same, though CDRIdentifier ID's the 24 & 32X TDK the same.

The disc reads the same in both my Plextor CDRW and my LiteOn DVD drive, so the drive is not at fault.

Anybody have any suggestions?

This maybe slightly off topic, but for a while now, if I burn CDs with my USB burner in Comp #1, the CD cannot be read by my DVD drive, or the CD-RW that just burnt it. The drive continually scans it, and then reports it as blank after a 5 minute period. The CD does however work perfectly in computer number 2. Both systems run Windows XP

Now when I burn a CD with the same CD-RW on computer #2, the CD works fine in computer #2, and works fine in computer #1. Weird.

Whats also weird, is that at one point, I was able to burn CD's fine with this computer. Now I cannot.

I believe it has something to do with some sort of 'copy protection' I've recently heard about that Windows XP has..I've downloaded the latest XP patch from Windows Update that said it fixed my exact problem, but nope, no change.

😕

<< What OS you running Viper? >>

He is running XP (he has the Dual 1800+)
I am dual boot XP and 2K (both have the same problem) on my P3

Did this just start happening recently? The latest CDRW 'fix' on the Windows update site messed up Nero for a bunch of us. Uninstalling the hotfix didn't return things to normal. I currently can do data stuff but lock up doing audio.

And I thought I was the only one...

I've got the exact same problem with my Plextor 24x.

I can burn everything fine, drive benchmarks fine with commercial discs...but burn an image, copy a disc, etc. and the Plextor cannot read it faster than 3x-8x (generally about 5x). This is with CloneCD, Nero, DirectCD (closed CDR), DiscJuggler, and EZCD 5. I've tried Mitsui, Verbatim, and TDK media all rated up 24x (minimum).

I've even put a Win 98 image back on and it can't read the discs either -- so it's a "bad" burn in Win XP.

The drive also has problems with certain audio CDs but I don't think it's related to anything else but the drive.

PIII 800, 512 MB, Plextor 24x10x40, Win XP Pro...

I've been trying to figure out this problem for awhile now...Plextor tech. support has been stumped.

I'll put Win 98 back on and do some test burns tonight (5:30 MST) to see how those discs benchmark and are read...

Well, just finished burning a disc in Windows 98...

and it read perfectly -- so for me, the problem is related to Win XP.

Well damn...

I'll be re-installing Win 2K sometime in the near future (When I get my WD 120 GB), so I'll give it a shot then.

Really odd this is happening.. I used to be able to burn fine, even with this current install of XP. I wonder whats going on!

This is my only real issue with XP right now, I wish it would be resolved.

Hmm, I seem to remember, off a fresh install of XP, there is a patch for CD burners, but I cant seem to find it in my Windows Update Installation history. For some reason, I believe I did that patch almost a month after my install. I cant remember the time my burns started to go bad, but something tells me it was right around that time.

There was a second burner update released just over a week ago and that did not fix the problem.

I cant currently test myself right now because I dont want to loose this install at the moment for such a small issue, but perhaps that first CD Burner patch is whats causing the issue. Maybe someone could try burning with a fresh install, and then again after that first patch is installed?

I had no problems after the first patch which was months ago. It was only after the 2nd patch that things hosed. Uninstalling the patch didn't fix anything. Reinstalling Nero didn't help.

<< and when mine show's up I will be reinstalling both OS's..... >>

I think I'm also going to start running mandrake again, I'll see how it burns from there 😀

well, I've formated and installed Windows XP on the new drive, I made it a point to avoid the CD burning patches, installed nero, burned the same CD image that I had been burning before @ 32x
and it works great now. two and a half min. for that 600MB CD image and we can pull it off the CD just fine on multiple drives. maybe it does have to do with those XP burning updates
