cd burning questions

i've read that if you were to burn at 12x, the read speed needed is at least 24x. so basically, the read spead needs to be doubled.

is this true?

i've got a pioneer 16x dvd and a lite-on 48x12x48 and i was wondering if anyone's able to burn at 48x with a 40x cdrom.
 
I'm not sure I understand the question..

Are you refearing to doing on the fly copies using your Pioneer as the source drive and your Lite-On as the burner?
 
you'll be ok. The reason is that even if the cdrw were to "get ahead" of the dvdrom reading the data, the cdrw will basically pause itself until there is enough information flow to start burning again. When this happens, it's called "Buffer-underrun protection" or a couple other names by different companies. It just means that when there's no data to write (since it's burning faster than the data can be supplied) the burner will stop burning (the disc will keep spinning, since it's a short pause) until the information starts coming through again to the cdrw, and it will keep burning.
