CD burning questions - Nero, HPCD, EasyCD

I've had a recurring problem trying to burn audio CDs - CDs I burn, whether they're mixes of ripped MP3s or direct CD-ROM to CD-RW copies, will play just fine on my PC, portable CD player, car CD player, even my old AIWA shelf system. Where they won't play is in my brand new Sony DVD player (part of a componenet home theater system). That player just won't recognize the disc.

I'm completely baffled by this, 'cause a friend burned me a copy of one of his CDs with his system (internal HP with EasyCD) and everything reads it fine, even the Sony DVD player. My first try was with an external HP burner via USB from a laptop - I figured maybe that was a reason, but then I just tried it with Nero on my new internal Lite-on burner, with the same result. Anybody have any ideas what I might be doing wrong, or what I can do to fix it?

Thanks,
Jason

Jason, perhaps you should try to use a different type of media. What type do u use and what type of media did your friend give you that worked?

Yeah, definately try different CD-R disks. My parent's Plextor 12/10/32 handles everything I've tossed at it just fine, but my own new Lite-On 24/10/40 has problems with some TDK disks, the one with a white label that's easier to write on. TDKs without the label work just fine as does everything else I've tossed at it.

I don't know if this applies, but sony playstations are said to require that writes are done at a lower speed for the cdr backups. That speed can be as low as 2x , but 2x to 12x can suffice.

On the playstation , they claim their lasers (not all) are tempermental to cdrs written at higher speeds, and most sites about PSX backups suggest 2x writes.

Perhaps your friend's writer is a lower speed.

It might be worth it to try writing one cdr at a lower speed to see if it works. Of course the write will take much longer, but if it works, you'll know what is wrong.

There's an idea - I'll try that out first chance I get. Thanks!
