CD Burning problems

I can't use Nero or similar software to burn CDs. I don't believe that even my dvd-writer will burn CDs, either. I always get errors before the process has even begun, and I cannot eject the disc. The front of the drive has a little blinking red LED that just flashes.

Could someone helpe me out here? Is this a DMA issue or something caused by the new dvd-writer?
 
Is it on the same IDE cable as the older drive? Did you remember to set the Master/Slave jumpers correctly on both drives? Or use Cable Select mode on both, along with the 'appropriate' cable?
