CD Burner Problems!

Someone gave me a CD writer a few months ago. It took a while to get it working (first I updated the ATAPI, which didn't work, but putting the writer as the slave on the primary IDE channel got it to work). I haven't used it in around a month and nothing has been changed on my system, but now whenever I go to burn a CD I get the following error within DeepBurner (never could get Nero to work with it):

WRITE ERROR [MEDIUM ERROR (POWER CALIBRATION AREA ERROR)]
Burn failed

Another part of the issue is that when I put a CD-R in the drive all the burn speeds except 4x and Max disappear. It isn't the CDs, as I have used these before without any problems. Also, the writer reads data and music CDs fine.

I am using Windows 2000 and have looked up the error in google and tried a few suggestions with no luck.

I've tried disconnecting every hard drive (except the primary master) and have tried putting the CD-RW on every available IDE channel. Have also forced the CD-RW to use Ultra DMA instead of the PIO transfer mode in the device manager, but none of these changes make any difference.

I've tried 3 different brands of disc (at least 2 of which worked before) and I have tried burning with DeepBurner and the MagicISO Burner.

Before I forget, it's a MICRO-STAR CD-R/RW 52x24x52 - Model No: MS-8352A.

I hope that this post isn't too long; I've tried to give as much info as possible.

I would really like to fix this if possible as I have a lot of stuff I need to backup to CDs, and am too poor to buy another CD-RW at the moment :/

Does anyone have any ideas how I may be able to get this working, or does it sound like it's dead (for burning at least)?
