CD Burner buying time...the choices

Well, my Plextor 8/4/32 decided to die, just a couple months past warranty. And Plextor would be "happy" to charge me $100 + shipping to try refurbishing it. Yeah, ok. So I think its time to get a new drive. Seeing how everyone says Plextor is really great (I liked mine 'till it stopped working) I'm willing to give them another chance.

I'm currently looking at
Plextor 16/10/40 for $175 - $20 rebate or
Teac 16/10/40 for $120 (decent review on CDR-Info )

as my primary options. Is the Plextor that much better for the $50 more, initially?
Are there any other real options? Cheaper is better, but quality needs to be there. I've heard Lite-ons are rather cheap (in cost and build quality)

Thanks!

JohnnyKnoxville: Well, it tells me their drives get hot 🙂 Actually, I think they did away with
the fan on the 24x models, as they have a more efficient chipset, which leads me
to...

VBoy: Yeah, 24x would be great, but I need cheap, as I'm also going to be getting
a dual board and at least 1 1.2Ghz Palomino soon. Any inexpensive, good 24x
burners you know of?

I think newegg has the Lite On 16x Burn Proof for $85

Bah. Hmmm. I can get the Lite-on 24x drive for $160 shipped. Gah. Tempting but...will someone tell me of their experiences with Lite-on? Any problems? If my Plextor died after 15 months, it basically makes the warranty on any drive look worthless. I'm debating the Lit-on now. Someone tell me, is it a good company or do they produce pieces of crap? (The reviews on CDR Info look positive)

Thanks...

Venner, you might want to start a new thread on whether Lite-Ons are reliable, you'll get more responses than in this thread..

I had the Plextor, and I like what I read about the Teac. But if you want "Bang for the buck" get the AOpen 12x10x32 😉
I did, and I have no regrets. I got mine from New Egg for like $99. Retail package too!

Screw Yamaha, Plextor, AOPEN, go for lite-on, cheap and high quality stuff. I've sold a ton of these and I usually don't campagne for companies but I think a little good ol word of mouth is due when deserved. Gotta hand it to them, not bad for a company that has a website that looks like a 3 years old made.

i have the liteon 24x and like it a lot. However reviews don't really talk about reliability, so i don't know how reliable this drive is until i've had it for a while. It works incredibly well now though. Not a single coaster, and burns 16x media at full speed.
