CD-burner brings my computer to a crawl...any ideas?

Hey guys,

My LG 12x CD-RW drive has been giving me problems. First of all, it makes my computer hang really badly during the boot process. Secondly, it makes my computer almost unusable while I'm burning a CD in Nero 5.5.8.2. I'm running an athlon 133 system with 512 ram, so I don't think this should be happening. Any ideas as to the cause? Thanks,

Dave.

Check to make sure you have UDMA enabled on your drive , if your using win2k or XP then enable it in the device manager.

I've tried that already and it made no difference.
🙁
Someone on another forum told me that there is some sort of incompatibility between windows 2000/xp and the LG cd burners. I just wish I knew some way to fix it. It's looking like I'll need to buy a new cd burner. 🙁.

Check to see if there is an updated firmware for your cdrw !

Update , here is the firmware page for your drive Here

Just read up on the correct model # for your firmware.

LG quote
Q. Is my LG brand drive compatible with Windows XP? If not, what do I need to do to have it be compatible?
A. All LG Brand CD-RW drives are compatible as CD-ROM readers. All drives except the CED-8041B and the CED-8042B are compliant as a CD-RW drive as well.
Roxio 5.01 or higher software must be used to allow for the burning function to be supported. Other brand software may also be used, but Roxio software is the only software supported by LG Electronics.

All LG brand CD-RW drives purchased after 10/01/2001
who receive Roxio version 4.02 or higher software may obtain a free upgrade to Roxio 5.0. Software updates to 5.01 from the 5.0 will be available through Roxio as soon as they are released.

Customers who have purchased an LG CD-RW drive prior to 10/01/2001 may upgrade to 5.0 either by purchasing it direct through Roxio, or by calling our parts department at 1-800-243-0000 option 1, then 1, then 1 M-F 7-5 CT. The Part # is 6956H31005M.

i have the latest firmware (2.0) and the problem persists. any other ideas? lg support is useless, i emailed them and they never got back to me. oh well, i guess it's time for a cdrw upgrade...
🙁

The only thing I could think of was that DMA was not enabled. Make sure it is enabled in the BIOS and in Device manager.

That said, ALL CDs, DVDs, CDRWs, etc are ALL compatable with ALL versions of Windows. The question is, does the motherboard BIOS support it? And the answer is, yes it does. Unless it's an old ass Socket 5 or Socket 7 board that was made by some odd-ball company...

dma is enabled...still problems. could it maybe be the cable? i'm not 100% sure that the cable i'm using is DMA...i think it's just a regular ide cable. could that be it?

Are you copying a CD? if so, are the CD drive and the burner on the same IDE channel...that could cause a bottleneck too.

no, they're on different channels, and i tried a different ide cable and still i'm getting problems. it seems like this one has everyone stumped...
:/

Help me out with this: Could running devices in windows protection mode cause this problem? I know it made mine boot up very slowly.

Just a thought...Aardy

ok guys i figured it out (kinda). i just disabled DMA on the drive, and voila, things are back to normal. i haven't tried burning a cd yet, but i'll keep you guys posted. i'm guessing that the drive just doesn't support DMA mode. strange. anyhow, thanks for all the interest and support.
