CD and DVD Burn problems

I have been getting very long burn times on both cd's and DVD's. Last night it took 35 minutes to burn a 52x cd at 48x speed on my lite-on burner. I also made a coaster DVD my 4/5 this week. I just replaced my 40 pin ide cable with a 80 pin one and it still does the same. The cyberdrive dvd is master secondary, and the lite-on burner is secondary slave. My motherboard is an Asus A7N8X deluxe. I think i might have some ide setting disabled in my bios or something. This problem has been perplexing me for months now. I Really want to get it fixed. I have updated firmware on both drives.

try getting branded blank cd's.

The cheaper ones sometimes will only burn at a much lower speed than stated

ok, i bow down in my hasty judgement.

apologies ;-)

check that the drives are DMA rather than PIO
Also, check within device manager what the drives show up as

maybe it is worth also getting a drive cleaner [like an audio tape cleaner, but a cd with very fine hairs on it]

in device manager

right click the drive and goto properties -
run through what is there

if you right click the drive, then go to properties,
is there a 'Settings' tab?
if there is, it should be in there

You did say device manager. Anyways, the DMA/PIO settings were under secondary IDE channel. Bothe device 1 and 2 were set to PIO only. Now I put them DMA and its back. I am now burning 8x with cheap media, and now i can finally listen to music while burning also. Before i would get a horrible crackling during everysound including mouse clicks. I was about two secinds from buying a new burner on newegg, now i can hold off until dual layer media arrives. Thanks for helping me figure this problem out. My DVD finishes burning as I type this message!
