I guess I have to admit, anyone using Chris Bryant's CCNA materials and CCNP materials is really a CCIE-minded candidate to begin with. He teaches it like he is grooming CCIE's. I'll agree to that for sure.

This is what to expect from a Private Enterprise Class Network (virtual):

1. You will have to access to Skype to communicate (language: U.S. English).

2. You will need to have a SecureCRT/Telnet Terminal Emulation program of your choice (no support is offered for every program at this time - I use SecureCRT, many use Putty/Teraterm, etc.)

3. You will need access to Cisco Client VPN software and be expected to use it to access the network.

4. You will be expected to actively participate in the planning, design, procurement process, implementation, and operation of the network, including troubleshooting and documentation of this network. Collaboration is the buzzword. Change Control is how we all have to or should be working in the field. The goal is accountability.

5. We are starting with a Cisco 3 Layer Design - 2950 Switches or 3550 PoE Switches and Wireless APs (LWAPP and Autonomous APs) for the Access Layer, 4000 Switches and 3550's for the Distribution Layer. A Catalyst 6500 and 3560's will Serve as the Core of this infrastructure.

6. The PSTN will be a Cisco Router.

7. The Frame Switch(es) will the Cisco Routers.

8. The ATM Switching Infrastructure is Cisco LS1010.

9. The Metro Network Infrastructure is a pair of Cisco 3550 Switches.

10. The MPLS/ISP Infrastructure/Mesh is a lot of 4500/4700 Routers with various interfaces Serial/ATM/Ethernet/etc.

11. ISDN Switching is provided by an ADRAN ATLAS 500/800 Mesh.

12. The server farm is mostly Microsoft and this will provide services like Radius/TACACS, PKI/Certificate Services, SMTP/POP3/IMAP, FTP/SCP/TFTP, DNS, DHCP, NTP, etc.

13. The VoIP Network Components are Cisco.

14. The Wireless Network is a combination of Cisco/Airespace.

15. Routers/Switches/Firewalls/VPNs/IDS/IPS Devices are Cisco.

16. NAMs are Cisco

17. Load Balancers are Cisco CSS (pre-cursor to the Cisco ACE and similar in concept to the F5).

Remote participants will be allowed to join the network and access this network from a VPN, then RDP to the jump Server, from there the users will be able to access this network and perform configuration tasks or access other available network resources.

This are some of the projects/tasks/assignments that my apprentice will be asked to complete as her skills develop.

I'll admit some of them seem daunting but hey... she's learning more and more every day and she won't be standing behind my shoulders watching.

Trial by fire.

I have to admit, she'll be using a variety of design guides, software tools, and other assorted aids to perform all of the tasks on a per project basis.

Over the years I've contributed the development of each of the above projects/tasks and since I was a sole or major contributor who also took the time to perform all given tasks listed, I know I can lead my apprentice to water.

I know many people who have not yet completed many of the above named tasks and I forgot about our Cisco SAN which is an important part of the network. Gotta build those arrays too.

I am not a mod here, but you may want to stick to an update once per day as you are pushing topics that could be more important here down the list.

I have been faulted for my 'blog' like posting, but I still keep it to once a day or when I have replies.

Status: She's working on TCP Windowing with Eli the Computer Guy now.

Hmm...

I've read above that it seems to some like she is studying enough for the CCNA as if it were for the CCIE instead.

Not quite true.

I, myself, am a rock solid CCNA at the very least. This means that there is pretty much no subject in the CCNA outline that I cannot speak to and pretty much discuss in detail as much as any instructor out there from mostly any company - at the CCNA level. I can preform binary/hex math on sight and have been able to for at least more than 5-6 years or so by now.

With that said, I took the CCNA Composite and both the 816 and 822 exams in 2009 or maybe 2010 and I know it took me almost all the time allotted to pass the exams.

I'm skilled and experienced and can speak at the CCIE level for the most part on mostly any topic from the current blueprint and to some degree mostly any of the previous blueprints.

So to answer the question: No she is studying IP Addressing, Subnetting, etc. at the level actually required for a CCNA to complete the CCNA certification exam(s) - not quite at the CCIE level - where she learns how to perform Wildcard calculations for filters, prefix-lists, etc. That all comes later.

WTF is a CCNP BGP/QoS/MPLS?

LOL

I passed all of the requirements to earn the CCIP certification - each exam is a certification at the CCNP level (note each exam itself renews the CCNP itself). My Route exam was too old to qualify for the then current requirements for the CCIP - even though it was still valid for the CCNP, CCDP, etc.

I hold quite a few pages of certification exams from Cisco in each of their domain - like partner exams, global exams or whatever they are called, and of course Cisco certification and specialization exams.

Normally I take every exam in a given track to re-certify my credentials as required, not just say a CCIE Written exam (I've passed 7 of these and failed 1 Beta so far).

I find it helpful and profitable to mention that I am certified for each of these exams that contain as much as or more than the CCIE RS level of knowledge for the CCIE Lab itself when it comes down to obtaining work and job opportunities afforded to me.

I guess I could put that I have passed both the CCIE Written Exams for Routing and Switching and also for Security too. Some do.

But if I were reading it, then I'd wonder why I did not go ahead and take/pass the CCDE Qualification exam, the CCIE Wireless, CCIE SAN, and the CCIE Voice (Unified Communications) exams too and then that leads me down the road of the CCIE Data Center track (which I have already been formally trained for courtesy of Fastlane in cooperation with Cisco at a Cisco facility).

I know I hold several specialist certifications like IPS, Firewall, VPN, etc. from Cisco too and while they might sound special to some, they are simply par for the course in my own book.

BGP, QoS, and MPLS... I consider these topics to be more advanced and very worthy of note.

I will have to pursue Video too since I have some explicit experience with this technology and Telepresence is in high demand despite the cots associated with this technology offering from Cisco.

Hope that helps.

It's a signature... with some credentials listed. No biggie either way.

Passing CCIE written means nothing except you are showing at least a CCNP level of knowledge and will not be wasting a lab space.

I have never seen someone go and invent their own certifications.

I used to think the same was true about the CCIE Written but the truth is it is very marketable and is also sought after and paid for as a premium
In fact.

I'm a CCNP and I get paid as well as or better than some CCIE folks.

I don't know of any legitimate company that looks at CCIE written as a qualifier. It's a test at the CCNP level.

If you are taking $50/hr contracts like you stated, you are not making CCIE money. There are bad CCIE's out there though. I don't know of any making less than $120k/yr plus bonuses non-contract.

:)

I thought I was being very very modest about my own credentials.

This is what I post on my resume currently:

CERTIFICATIONS:
Ø CCNP / CCSP/CCNP-Security / CCVP/CCNP-Voice / CCNP-Wireless / CCDP / CCNA / CCDA
Ø CCNA-Security, CCNA-Wireless, CCNA-Voice
Ø Certified as a CCNA since 2000 and CCNP since 2001
Ø Passed CCIE Written Security and Routing/Switching Qualification Exams
Ø MCSE/MCSA (2000/2003 + Messaging, Active Directory, and Security / MCSE + Internet, NT 4.0)
Ø Microsoft Certified Trainer (2004-2008, currently Inactive)
Ø ITIL Foundations Certified
Ø Sniffer Certified Master since 2006

This little snapshot (I did say little didn't I?)... gets me offers that read like this week's batch hold tight and I'll post a few.

Comblues

Then if I can get all of my logins straight to all of my certification credentials straight from all of the vendors I am certified with... there are a few more than most folks except a few friends of mine like a guy we used to call "Overcertified" for example...

I'll demonstrate why I feel my little signature line is kind of modest compared to my credentials and my own experience gleaned over the years.

Hold tight I'm there already... Checking this week's e-mails.

I just tentatively accepted 3 of them at the same time.

The average CCIE Salary is about $93k to about $115k depending on whose salary survey we take into account for base salary and has been for a little more than a decade now - it varies a little.

Let me share what I see in my inbox.
