ccna and cisco routers

Hi,

I'm currently pursuing my ccna certification and i came across this cisco router (2504) for 65bucks on Australia's Ebay. Quite obviously, the real thing is better than any computer simulator.
Below are some specs that was listed and i'm having difficulty to determine if they are ok. Do you think, it is sufficient to have this router for ccna? Any help would be high appreciated

The router is ok, I would prefer a ethernet port over the token ring though.

FYI: For your ccna your going to need at least 3 routers and a couple of switches, in order to be a able to create a min network for testing and playing with.

One router is not going to allow you to do much in preparation for the CCNA. You will need multiple routers to recreate the designs in the CCNA book. A couple Cisco switches would not hurt either. Serial ports and ethernet ports would be the most useful too.

You will need a special serial cable to connect the serial ports, these are on ebay for just a few bucks

By the way, i'm using sybex ccna book for this training.

Do yourself a favor, and take a good class at a local CC (community college), most of them are relatively cheap and have many of the needed routers/switches already availible to use. You learn 1/3 to 1/2 of the availible commands by just taking a book course (as far as I know) vs. taking a class where you have complete access to routers/switches.

yeah, for those a simulator would be fine.

even for CCNP a simulator would be fine. IMHO

I would recommend the Cisco Press book (by Wendell Odom, I think). I studied it for 5 days (albeit 12 hours a day for 5 days) and passed with an 896. I did have about a year of experience with the equipment before I tried it. I think they cover Vlans really closely now, not as much when I took it.

Ertaz: Very nice to hear that. Almost everyone that i know, said the ccna exam was very difficult. Anyway, i just started my self-paced studying, we'll see how it goes

I found another router setup. It is ethernet this time instead of token ring.

Well the problem with simulator is that it can be quite costly, unless you can give me a link in bit torrent to download it. Anyone?

I'm quite keen on setting up a home ccna lab. I work well from home cisco 2515 router

yeah, but for CCNA you don't really need to know it that well.

i downloaded this router simulator called semsim ccna router for ccna.

i can only see two routers, two switches, 3 host and on tftp server. That was no where close to what you have mentioned above.

Anyway, i'll be using the router simulator. I really appreciate to muck around with some real hardware. But i probably can't afford it at the moment.

Any other router simulator apart from semsim? It looks quite dodgy and ugly!
