BTW, if somebody still unaware, Citibank offers the complimentary Citiclick card which has improved security for online shopping (read - better understanding customer service stuff). Besides, they are offering some nice features (which I still have to explore) like price garatee etc. And 1% cashback on all online purcases.
Blue From Amex is another nice deal. Comes with a Smart Chip and cute USB card readrer (for free) and a batch of usefull services. Way to go. I'm shopping online ;-)

sure, shopping online can be dangerous...but shopping at a retail store can also be just as dangerous, if not more. it's true that any hacker, who needs some sort of "talent" can get into an online stores' database, but just about any criminal with no type of education can get a job at your local restaurant or supermarket.

For those of you that have read the FW posts. That paste from Drugstore.com isn't from Drugstore.com because the company's president is Peter Neupert, not Harry Widdifield. And even in the paste itself is the word ihateshopping.net.

I use paypal, bought from drugstore and haven't seen any charges from russia.

Amen to that!

I have a VISA Check Card from Washington Mututal and I use their PC Banking feature to check my account almost every 48hrs.

I'm thinking about getting an AMEX or Discover just for that one time use CC#.

I feel that I must chime in to on this one. Here's what I found about 4 months ago on my CC account.

/////////////////////////////////////////////
08/04/00 PRESTON MARKET $43.00

07/26/00 SKIFTELECOM $41.91

After a quick web search, here's what I found:
PRESTON MARKET is in Australia
http://www.darebin.vic.gov.au/shopping/market.html

SKIFTELECOM is some sort of Russion ISP
http://www.darebin.vic.gov.au/shopping/market.html
/////////////////////////////////////////////

Can you believe that? What the heck is up with that?!?! :Q

If you ever get drilled with charges you did not make don't worry. Someone said that Citibank did not reimburse them for the ENTIRE amount. Thats Bull, DO NOT allow them to get away with this. If you did not make the charge, you are not responsible for it. There is actually federal law that requires the credit card company to credit you back for these. So, if they try to stick it to you, don't let them get away with it.

Am I paranoic ?
I was browsing Ecrap for a Nexstar telescope and bum: a newcomer (0 background)to the auction site has ca. 25 auctions of different new unpacked highly attractive goods. He accepts only VISA. All his auctions end during one hour. There is no info on the pages who he is, why he is selling etc. A perfect anonymous who will be given CC numbers and then disappears ?
What do you think ?

Definitely don't actually *give* anyone like that on e-Bay your credit card number. It does sound like a scam if he wants you to actually give your CC number or use some service that you've never heard of. However, if he's using BillPoint, there's no way he can actually ever get your credit card number... he'll never see it. And he'd be an idiot to use BillPoint to try to defraud buyers, as not only will the money be taken right back out of his account if you do a chargeback, but he'll also be assessed a chargeback fee as well.

Add me to the list. This summer I got hit with a $220 charge from Western union. apparently someone thought it would be cute to send $200 to some chap in Bulgaria. The card is from a small local bank, it kept them pretty entertained. Western Union followed up on it too, just the other day the fraud department called and asked for a couple details. It was stuff I alredy told them when it happened, but still, it's nice to know that they are looking into it.

There is a notorious super-hacker (can't remember his name, someone helps me out here... saw his picture in the papers, the guy is some really ugly geek) in Russia with a huge ego who bragged about being able to hack into any system and stealing credit card and bank accunts. The corrupted Russian government simply refused to work with the West and to arrest or do anything about this guy. In fact, the last time I read about this guy, he had formed some organized crime that stole credit cards from the U.S. and Europe, with backing from corrupted officials.

My guess is the recent unauthorized Global Telecom Moscow Russia charges on you guys' credit cards have something to do with that Russian guy.

Since the Russian government refused to cooperate, I think the U.S. government or some Western European country should send in secret agents or assasination units and put that evil Russian geek out-of-business.

Whoa, where in the world are they getting your numbers? Did anyone figure out where the leak is from? Did those people who received telecom charges from Moscow compare stores to see where the link might be?

I've got like 8 credit cards and 1 debit card (signs of a hardcore deals addict still in denial).

Those of you who had a fraudulent charge from "GLOBAL TELECOM MOSCOW RUS" where do you think they got your cc from? (drugstore.com? I hope not because I've bought from them before).

Hmmn plow through pages and pages of cc statements or surf for more deals, what do you think I'm gonna do?

Sleep of course!

I got a temp charge on the 16th for $16.25 looks like it didn't go through. I am not worried about people stealing my CC# and running up a bill, get a CC# that you can check online. Plus if they don't credit me the fraudalent charges, I will take my business else where. And I do run up a $400-$600 per month, thank you Anandtech and Fatwallet.

RossMan:

I don't know about you, but if I received a fraudulent charge on my card I'd at least make an attempt to figure out where it came from, and then vow never to shop there again unless they fixed their system.

It's not worth the hassle of calling the credit card company, filling out the forms, and waiting for the dispute to go through every single time someone decides to charge me $10 in Russia.

But that's just me, and I'm really anal about my stuff. And by the way, I have 6 credit cards and 1 debit card. I still monitor all my transactions and I can tell you in five minutes which shady stores I bought from.

There are credit cards available that issue a different one-time use number for each charge you make on the internet. One is MBNA Mastercard, and the other is American Express.

Heard a story on CNN the other day that some hacker was trying to extort money from creditcard.com(an intermediary between dot.com's and your credit card company) by saying that they were going to release a large amount of CC numbers they hacked out of thier system. The date for the extortion payment passed and the hacker made good on their threat, and a bunch of CC numbers were released. Next day the GMcard put a block on my account because someone charged $1800 in the Netherlands for software and had it shipped to England. ThankYou GMcard.

This whole thread weirded me out, so I checked my on-line statement. Well it appears that the opposite happened to me, I ordered a nice comfy leather chair and a $20 desklamp from Officemax, I was looking for the charges and I checked and re-checked and checked my statement again and they didn't charge me?!??
I'm a pretty moral guy, but I draw the line at calling back a retailer two weeks after the purchase to ask them to charge me. Am I doing the right thing?

Orbis: Morally, and if we'd live in a perfect society - you'd be wrong. In real life - screw them ;-) On the other hand - don't get all too excited - it might take a while before the charge will go through. At one time, I was filling up at one gas station for 3 (!!!!!) months, and didn't get no charges in my statement. Then, on the fourht month they all showed up there at once ;-)))

Thanks for the advice AEKC, I mean if I was buying groceries or something and they gave me too much change I give it back. But it's not worth the risk & hassle to call them up, knowing my luck i'd probably get charged twice. :| .

Anyways I'm amazed that so many people in Anandtech have been ripped off via using credit cards. I'm going to keep on my toes after reading this.

thanks for the heads up. unfortunately people like this exist and will always be around, and the only thing we can do is watch and notify others when it happens...getting a hot deal here and there is one thing. screwing somebody over is something completely different. my advice, use 1 cc for online purchases and examine every line item on that statement every month.
