I opened my online checking acct and found the now prevalent "$14.95 PURCHASE MADE ON 08/24/04 AT KURTZ ENTERPRISES 775-5518149 SC" charge on my acct. THe odd thing is that I have ONLY used this card for purchaes at NEWEGG.COM. It could be a million other sources, but it makes me wonder. Anyone else get hit by this scam AND use their CC for newegg purchases?

BTW, I love newegg and that might be my firstborn's name, just wondering about the coincidence.

why dont you call your credit card company?

From google search:
Company
Kurtz Enterprises
Address:

South Carolina
U.S.A.
Phone Number:
775-551-8149
Fax:

An unauthorized charge from Kurtz Enterprises for $14.95 was found on my current Visa credit card statement.... transaction date July 22, 2004. I have never dealt with this company before.

I called my CC company and notified them of possible fraud (from the accounts on this website..thanks!). The charge is currently in dispute , we will be monitoring all transactions closely (I always do online anyway) and hopefully a positive outcome will be the result.

I will be patient, however, the next step will be to file a complaint with the authorities at www.ifccfbi.gov.

I have made a couple hundred online CC purchases over the past 8 years without a problem, it is really disturbing to know that your CC info is never safe anywhere, anytime, anymore.....

EDitor's Suggestions on how to get your money back!

HERE IS WHAT RIP-OFF REPORT SUGGESTS YOU DO:

Go to your bank within 60 days of the charge, or as soon as you know about the charge, don't delay, and tell them that there has been fraudulent activity within your account. Explain that you wish you file a dispute, and demand that they assist you in accordance with Federal Regulation E.

According to the majority of victims interviewed by Rip-off Report, those who immediately called their banks to dispute the charges did not get very far. Many victims got the following responses from their banks: ?we could not do anything for you? or ?you waited too long; it has been more than 60 days?.

If the bank is says that you have waited too long, explain to them how you called their 800 number as soon as the charges were found, and were told by the bank that nothing could be done. Remind the bank that they failed to assist you properly at the 800 # , and instead, provided you with an inadequate explanation of your right to dispute. Tell the bank that it's their fault time has expired, and since they gave you the wrong info to begin with, they will just have to deal with it, take the loss and reverse the charges.

Tell them the truth; this was unauthorized and your account was NOT to be charged! Keep emphasizing how you never authorized anything! Direct them to the hundreds of victims reports that were filed on Rip-off Report.com. And if you're at the bank, walk them over to their computer and make them go to this site! If you are on the phone with them, tell them you will wait while they access this site! Either way, be persistent!

DO NOT TAKE NO FOR AN ANSWER!

Let them know nicely, that you were advised to Report them (the Bank) and this situation to the Banking Commission in your state. Since each state has a different name for the agency/comptroller over banks, find that name before you call or get to the bank so you can throw it in their face. The more knowledgeable you appear to be, the further you will get.

And just continue to demand the Federal Regulation E form! The bank CAN, MUST and WILL reverse the charge! But, you must be persistent; ask to speak to the supervisor or the area manager for all the branches in the state.

Let the bank personnel know you are meeting with the media later in the day, that you would much rather they do the right thing (as most other banks have) by looking at the complaints and immediately reversing the charge(s) to your account; no matter how long ago it was. Be sure to call the Media if necessary so you are telling the truth.

If you have to, be loud (but nice) in front of other customers. If you are just calling by phone, the above tactics should still work. The bank can easily fax or mail to you the Federal Regulation E dispute form.

CHARGES TO YOUR CREDIT CARD

If the charge was to your credit card (not debit card, check card, or checking account), contact the credit card company as soon as possible to request a dispute form. Consumers usually have a little longer to dispute fraudulent credit card charges (up to 6 months), but it is better to act right away. In this type of situation, credit card disputes are usually successful since fraudulent companies often won't contest the disputed charge. In rare cases, credit card companies will review disputes, but refuse to reverse the charges. If this occurs, complain to a manager and let them know you will be filing a report here.

Remember? Don't let them get away with it! Make sure they make the Rip-off Report .. The more Reports filed on a Company or individual, the more likely it is that the authorities, media and attorneys will want to take action.

And good luck? Let us know how you do!

Way to blame the victim Dave ---but, I believe that would be phish"ed," but no. :)

Despite my seeming newbie status I've been around the block a few times (been on A'tech for more than 4 years with different names, been reselling computer parts for around 5 years, and most recently admitted to the NYS bar) and that's the sole reason I only use the card at newegg.

And, I did call my CC company and cancel the charge, I was just posting because I was in a possibly unique situation wherein I had a CC with doing biz with only ONE company. I thought if another person got hit with the same scam, AND did biz with newegg, it might raise an eyebrow.

Krk: I did the same google search before, thanks, just wanted to check with the guys here.\

Different names at different times for diff reasons, I switched ISPs, I had a free AOL acct for awhile (I would never pay for it) and thus had to quit those names --- they dislike AOL here. No deception or ripping people off, I merely stayed away from the forums for a few months prior to my bar exam and in that time the folks here killed my old AOL acct name.

I just opened my CC statement and also found the same charge from Kurtz Enterprises on my account. I searched for the company on Google b/c I had never heard about this company. All the hits indicated that it was a ripoff.

I purchased several things from NewEgg on the 8th of August and the Kurtz charge was on the 11th of August. I contacted the CC company and had the account cancelled. The fraud investigation is under way. I've ordered from NewEgg in the past and never had any issues.

Thanks for posting about it b/c NewEgg wasn't the only place I ordered online from last month, but it did have the most purchases.

I have the same charge on my card dated 8/21. I've purchased many things on this credit card, though I haven't bought anything from Newegg lately. I have indeed used this card to purchase things from Newegg in the past though.

Edit: My credit card company won't do anything unless I try to contact Kurtz Enterprises. Has anyone tried calling the number on their statement? It is 775-551-8149.

So has anyone contacted Newegg on this? Obviously he got CC #'s from somewhere, and there are too many people in this thread to be a coencidence from phising or anything like that. I'm a Newegg shopper like everyone else, so it makes me nervous if that kind of info is out there.

This is precisely the sort of problem that single use credit card numbers are supposed to solve. I loved AMEX Blue because of this. But they discontinued the damn service! :(

tjmaxwell - I saw online that someone had tried to call the company and the only thing that they ever got was a recording telling them to leave a message. I haven't personally tried to call though.

ViRGE - I e-mailed NewEgg last night (service@newegg.com) and let them know what was going on. They haven't gotten back to me yet, but I told them I wouldn't be using them anymore until they did.

Call the CC issuer -- some bank more than likely -- and ask them to check for any transactions to/from Kurtz Enterprises. Very few banks will have problems with you doing this. You may also be able to ask them to deny all charges to Kurtz Enterprises without exception. If you have an AMEX card more than likely you'll be able to do that.

I just ordered from Newegg for the first time a couple of weeks ago. My last statement didn't have any such charge on it, but I'll update if I see it on the next one.

Edit: By the way, those of you that have this mysterious charge: do you have your cc info saved onto Newegg's system? I opted out of that.

I got hit with this charge for a credit card that I wasn't even aware that I had open. The account was open for three years, without ever being used, and out of the blue I got a bill for $14.95 from Kurtz Enterprises. I talked to the CC folks, and after a lot of headaches they sent me the paperwork to resolve the issue.. including an affadavit to get notarized and returned. They are going to "investigate" the fraudulent charges, but I doubt they will get very far. I told the CC company to save themselves some time and do a quick google search for Kurtz Enterprises, and find that this is indeed a known scam.. but they still wanted paperwork. (for historical records I suppose)

Interesting....I was just out on Newegg looking at buying a new scanner. As I was checking out I noticed they had red text saying the Newegg preferred account had been disabled for "maintenance." I wonder if that has something to do with this scam? I don't have a Newegg account and always use the same credit card to order from them. I haven't seen a charge from Kurtz. Like someone mentioned earlier....I wonder if it has to do with the fact that I never save my card info on Newegg's site. To me that is just asking for trouble.
