This was originally posted by Siddhartha in another thread. Deserves its own thread though. Interesting how clearly Americans are against this war in Iraq, and this is despite strong efforts from a few extremists to spread misleading information about limited success in places like Anbar. Tragically, we will never win this war the way it is being fought now, and the majority of Americans agree. Not that the average American citizen is an expert, but every non-partisan Iraq group has been saying the same thing before and during this surge; it hasn't worked to achieve the ultimate goal, which is a rooting out terrorism and giving Iraq a fighting chance to install a democratic beacon of light in the ME.

On a different note, it's been enlightening seeing just how little Democrats have pushed through their policy in Iraq. They attempted once to set timetables for withdrawal, which they knew would get vetoed by Bush, but they have also been unable to get even the slightest accommodations elsewhere, such as lengthening the time off troops get between tours of duty.

You notice that the number of people who want to increase or keep the same amount of troops in Iraq is almost the same as the number of people who want to withdrawal all the troops.

Also notice that this poll was taken AFTER Bush and some generals started talking about removing some troops from Iraq. So some of the ?decrease? the number of troop responses could be from people who are in agreement with the President.

I am not going to claim that there is a high level of support for the war, but I also don?t think we can make the statement that the majority of the country wants us to leave right now regardless of the consequences. If you look at the ?how much longer do you think large numbers of troops will have to remain in Iraq? you get the picture that over half the country believes we will be in Iraq for at least another 2-5 years.

as if what the people of the nation want matters anymore... seriously. we virtually live under an oligarchy.

we can have polls that show 100% of people want troops out... it's not going to make a bit of difference to the white house.

I somewhat disagree. While polls may not matter to the white house, the key is and remains peeling off at least 9 GOP moderates in the Senate. Then the congress can wrest control from GWB. As long as the GOP stays united in the GWB corner, the Senate can't do anything except totally cut off funding.

GWB may not be running in 08, but 22 Senators and all the remaining GOP house members are. You can bet those GOP legislators look at these polls with a growing sense of alarm.
The closer we get to the spring primaries the more panicky they will become.

That is a certainty that is now 13.5 months away. The question is, will the GOP blink and start running away from GWB well before then?

Maybe just raw speculation now, but its very easy to conceive of any number of events on the ground in Iraq that will totally discredit GWB and the surge and its very hard to conceive of events on the ground in Iraq that will constitute even a luke warm validation of the surge.

Indeed. But I'd say the supermajority has spoken pretty clearly. Now if only the Dems would pull a few political stunts to force Bush's hand and/or more Republicans started realizing they can't win with the current policy in Iraq.

My impatient american sense wants to vote to get them out right away. The other part of me knows we are already there and if we leave things will go really crazy. I think we need to stay there at least another 4 years even though I hate it.
