I agree. The draft fear is hardly bogus.

There are over two dozen Democrats trying to push for the legislation needed to reinstate the draft in America today. :)

As long as Bush is in the White House there won't be a draft. Charlie Rangel and the Democratic party tried to pass this issue in the House, but it was crushed because every Republican voted against it, on GWB's orders.

Besides, there's absolutely no need for more troops. More troops in Iraq will mean more casualties. It's easier, cheaper, more effective, and more politically expedient to train Iraqis to police their own country.

How do you know and why?

Politically motivated. Who cares? After the election he'll be able to do whatever he wants.

Have you seen how the training is going? And if there's no need for more troops why are troops that were promised to go home not being allowed to go home?

Just 31 more politcians to go. I support a draft if the volunteer numbers have dropped. How many young men andwomen have volunteered since Iraq war started? I would like to see the stats on that. For damn sure, thr milatary needs alot of good men and women to serve to keep this country secure and the world safe from the likes of terrorists organizations around the globe.

From what I've heard, the millitary has not had any problems hitting their recruitment targets this year.

That's not persuasive. I've heard the opposite. Get some real data and explain all the over reliance on the national guard...

Why do you folks still think we will have a draft?

The military is to specialized for this to ever happen.

We already have a draft right now in the form of stop gap and recalls.

That vote was BS. Like anyones stupid enough to vote yea right before election. Theres definity going to be a draft after the election if Bush wins. We will attack Iran which is 3x the population as Iraq and will need at least 400,000 troops. Add in Seria and maybe even NK and I would'nt be surprised if men up to 34 did'nt have to register.

I love how Democrats - instead of arguing one way on an issue - instead manufacture bogus issues out of thin air. They wanted the draft to be a controversy, so they themselves introduced a draft bill, and then told everyone it was a Republican plot.

Amazing, isn't it. And the funny thing is, some of the less intelligent ones are buying it.

That a draft would help make the numbers the military seems to need is hardly proof that the Bush administration will reinstate the draft.

Disproving the bogosity of draft fears would require Bush or Cheney saying they support a draft; I've only seen the opposite.

Agreed. Additionally, if we wanted to reach the former US Army strength of 778,000 volunteers from the post-1973, Cold War era, we'd recruit accordingly.

congress could easily increase the size of the military without a draft. It was only last spring(not sure of the date) that troop level was up for review, congress had the option of lowering, raising, or keeping the same level of troops. They voted to keep levels the same. If they had increased the troop levels by two divisions (as Kerry suggested) the roughly 12,000 troops required to fill those divisions would easily be filled.

The "back door draft" people keep whining about is grossly exagerated. Its main purpose is to maintain unit cohesion and keep expirienced specialists. But even during a time of war, each branch is only allowed to swell 3% above its congressionally mandated size.

And yes it is true that recruiting hsant been a problem for over a decade, I could dig up a recent article on http://www.usmc.mil about something like 13 consecutive quarters without a recruiting quota missed. The Navy and Air Force actually have to turn away a good amount of applicants now, allowing them to be more selective (minimum asvab scores for all branches are going up, not down, an indicator of the pool of applicants)

The draft simply wont happen within the next 4 years, no matter who the president, the pentagon is against it, and they will no doubt let the president know.
