Don't know how much faith to place into this, but the prices are listed in of those posts. The 6970 is going to be the same price as the 580 @ $499, so the performance should be near identical. The 6950 is going to be $375 (if the coversion is correct).

The performance part there is pure speculation, but looks like the 6970 will be able to compete well with the 580.

If HD6970 is priced as GTX580 it will be a major disappointment if isn't a clear notch faster than it.

Hmmm. If AMD released HD6970 and it performs better than GTX580, the only thing that makes sense is to price it at or above the price of GTX 580 (otherwise Nvidia will just lower the price of GTX 580 proportionally to how much slower it is than Cayman). The only way AMD pricing Cayman lower than GTX 580 (assuming it outperforms it) that makes sense is if AMD is trying to price Nvidia out of the market.

Well, that's because they singlehandly shifted the price/permance scale by enforcing price cuts. Ati have not (yet) responded to those pricecuts though.:\ Question is why they have not deemed this necessary yet.

You forget the GTX 460's were dropped in price heavily just to meet the 68xx's, and the 68xx's prices went up due to retailer gouging and other issues

That does not change the fact that a GTX 460 1GB is cheaper than any 68XX currently in the market.. and they have good stock too. Let your wallet do the talking.

GTX 460 1GB is the best price/performance card right now.

The answer to that question is implicit in the number of "out of stock" units over at Newegg. There is zero reason for AMD to reduce their prices while they're still quickly selling out everything they manufacture. The moment the demand slows down at the current prices is when we'll see the price cuts.

Yeah this is similar to the X18xx/19xx vs Nvidia 7xxx situation. Most often the ATI cards were better values perf/$, but Nvidia didn't lower prices because people were willing to pay for them regardless. AMD is selling on their rep earned by the great 4xxx and 5xxx series, even though educated customers (a rarity it seems!) can clearly see that the 460 is a much better buy with current pricing. I even know one poor sap who got back from deployment and replaced his "old" 5850 with a 6870, thinking that it would be like when he replaced his 4850 with the 5850. Stupid naming schemes. AMD really dicked around with that name game, just as Nvidia has done many times.

All of this will probably be reset as the new stuff comes through the market in the next couple of months.

There will be many pr lead definitions on which is the fastest and by what percentage. Heck I read somewhere that in reality the gtx 260 was actually faster than most of the modern midrange.
